Looking for a knife recommendation

Postby lenny7 on Fri Sep 21, 2012 12:32 pm

I need to buy a knife for my 14 year old son as a present for graduating Jr. High (yeah, I never got a present for graduating jr. high either but apparently that's what you're supposed to do now  , and yes, I'm am damn late in getting around to this ) and I'm looking for ideas for which model to get for him. He's a deer hunter, a bird hunter, and I'm looking to spend $60 to $75. Fixed blade or folder is fine. He has several folders so I'm leaning towards a fixed blade. First and foremost I want something that he'll actually want to use, not something to sit on his shelf and look pretty.

We're also planning on getting it engraved. Any idea where one would go in the metro area for that?

I think gerber makes a good knife. They have several options to choose from. As for engraving I'm stumped only place.I can think of is things remembered but I'm guessing they won't do a knife.

You can order a buck knife. Just go to their website and look into the knife builder.

I have a CRKT Triumph that I 'm quite fond of.... that's in your price range. Solid knife, usable blade shape, great overal utility + knife

EDIT.... I didn't read the whole post... you're looking for a hunting knife... the Triumph would be pretty bad at that.

Sorry.

Make that buck a gen 5 Skinner and you have a very well balanced fixed blade that's got about the perfect blade size. Looks nice next to a buck 110 folder. If he doesn't have a 110 folder, that would be my pick. It doesn't get any better IMO.

I have both of these and while they are great knives for the occasional tree chopping ;) they aren't very good for hunting knives.

I vote for something much smaller. Folder for what you describe are his hobbies. Schrade single blade gunstock trapper. Most useful knife i own.

Hmmm what size K-Bar do ya got? Mine is the big 7in non-serrated one. Not ripping on your knife choice, just giving my .02

No, it's all good buddy! I am just non-tolerant of change when I have a knife I like and am good with
