Pistol Racks for Safe

Postby sawgrass on Tue Oct 09, 2012 11:03 pm

Looking around and wondering if anyone has tried these?
If anyone has a better idea, please share. I've thought about building something out of tubing or wood, but both would require more space.
I wonder if these plastic coated wire racks over time and normal vibration that happens in most places will leave a mark?
I noticed a mark on a blued gun that lives in its original plastic box in the safe from the dang box so I'm not sure if these are a good idea or not.

Oldman who seems very resourceful, anyone...ideas? Thanks, SG

I use the similar product that we sell at fleet farm. I really like them and made a drawer like system using the racks for my pistols. That work really well to keep the guns from hitting each other and I haven't noticed any wear. I think we sell a 4 and 6 version for a little cheaper then the price you posted.

I've used wire racks for on desk file separation as pistol racks-separators in vaults.
The best I've seen and partially have used is wood board with dowels at an angle that fit in bore of barrel.
I will soon be making an aluminum plate with Delrin dowels for this purpose to fit my gun vault.
By making my own, I can determine best spacing, dowel size, and practicality of system for my guns.
Will post pics and prices IF idea works out well.

That sounds purdy good! Image

I jest cut 5/8 - 3/4 dowel to 'bout 4in ... slip 'em through the trigger-guard at an angle ... not as tight as them racks ... not as expensive, neither!

I'd try them dowels in the bore ... but I gotta go multiple rows, front to back! :?

I do set a couple upside-down ... resting on the sights ... leaning slightly against the sides ... if ya took like a 12in x 24in ('er however wide yer safe is) 3/8 - 1/2in plywood, and then screwed 3 - 4in 1x2's so they're perpendicular ... 'bout every 2.5in 'er so ... ya could set the guns into each "slot", upside-down, with the grips resting against the 1x2's! I dunno if that'd let ya store any more than my current dowel method ... but if ya measured the overall width of each gun, and varied the "slot" widths, I'd guess ya might?!

Do you have a jig saw? That and some 1x3" makes for a cheap and simple rack. Simply cut some large 'grooves' (V shaped or U shaped, your choice) at the spacing you would like. Use a few of the cut out pieces to be legs (two on one side, one on the other) to get the board to stand on edge with the notches facing up. Guns sit upright in the notches, with the butts on the shelf, barrel through/on the notch, and the trigger up against the board. You can make these to fit what ever length you need, and you can sand or router down the edges if you want to get fancy.

Not easy to explain, but I will post a pic of the real deal if someone is interested.

Notched out parts 1 and 2 on front (screwed from back), 3 on back (screwed from front).

Thanks for the ideas so far.

mbree if it isn't too much trouble, could you post a pic of the completed rack? Thanks.

Oldman I have to look up Delrin dowel. I don't know what that is.

I will try to post a pic tonight.

I used a number of these Gun Storage Solution hangers after I filled my available shelf space with the wood racks. The wood racks are all the way in the back, and these hangers allow another pistol to be hung in front off the shelf above.

I am currently trying out the holsters that attach via velcro to the door of the safe or any other "carpeted" are of the safe. Seem to work.

The inside of my safe is fabric covered sheet metal. I took the inside off. Just a few simple screws. Drilled several 1/4 inch holes. Attached bolts to the sheet metal and put it back on. Bolts must be threaded fully to the head. I then covered the threads on the screws with rubber hose. The handguns hang from their trigger guards. Room to store about a dozen handguns without taking any shelf space or room for long guns.
Because I care, I carry.

I have a couple of the racks the original poster asked about. They work great - very space efficient yet shaped and sized right I haven't really found any pistol yet that won't nestle well in them. The ones I've seen at Fleet Farm are very similar. I haven't noticed any wear marks from keeping guns on them, in some cases many years so far. I'd bet the carpet on the shelf in the safe, plus the rubber feet on the rack, plus the rubber coating on the rack itself, damps nearly all vibrations that would be going to the pistols that would cause wear.

Anyway, they work great. As do the velcro holsters that stick to the inside of the door, plus I have some guns on pegboard hooks covered with plastic tubing from the hardware store. All seem to hold the guns just fine and help maximize gun storage in a given area.
