taxidermist/leatherworker for turning hide into case?

Postby rukwikenuf on Fri Nov 09, 2012 9:28 am

got my first deer this year, dad suggested i have the hide turned into gloves/mittens, a sling or a rifle case. i'm leaning rifle case (pretty cool idea, huh?). anyways, i'm gonna need a taxidermist or leatherworker that can clean the rest of the hide, dry and tan it, and then work it. i'm in absolutely no hurry, as long as i can get it before next year!

anyways, do you have any suggestions?

You can tan it yourself. They sell white alum at Sun Foods.

i suppose.... though i'd rather have someone do it for me. also, i can't have any of the fur left on. i'm pretty damn allergic to animal dander, and deer are the WORST i've encountered

They stop producing dander once dead, and if you soak the hide and rinse it well it shouldn't be an issue.

Tanning isn't overly difficult, or expensive with the alum based solutions. I did mine for under ten bucks this fall.

Scoot over to Tandy Leather and ask them, there's a shop just north of Rosedale, the guys in there are always helpful. I could probably help you stitch it up if you want a simple sleeve type thing but you'll want to find someone with a machine if you want a zipper in there. I don't do zippers.
I personally think a fur rifle case would be outstanding...

My sister does leatherwork and has the sewing machine for it if you want a zipper . I can check with her if you want, she wouldn't do the tanning though I don't think.

thanks guys. i'm gonna try swinging in to Tandy on Tuesday, and see what they say. honestly, if i get a great big chamois cloth outta the thing i'd be happy. what i have read tells me that tanning the hide would require more time and patience than i have. however, if the pros over at Tandy Leather have enough insight, i may just give it a try.

and Stormhawk, that'd be awesome. i'll post something up here to let you know what happens
