This has been really helpful, Thank you all for your thoughts. I am looking for the experience of assembling a rifle, and your comments are pretty encouraging.

My advice, however arguable, is walk into a gun shop and find one that appeals to you. Open your wallet and buy some ammo with it. Go shooting at a range ASAP.

Thunderjohn has colt m4 ar15 with the "law enforcement....." Roll mark advertised on armslist....... You can't go wrong with a colt and his prices are right.
Anti-gun goofs fail to realize that if they melt every gun on the planet & I want you dead, a claw hammer would do the trick!! Then what? Ban claw hammers?

That is sound advice. But also do some research and discover what is available...

Another thing is act fast before they become harder and harder to find.

So after looking at all your fine rifles, I think I'd like to get an AR15. Do you have a recommendation for a beginners/economic AR? I am not looking for something to throw away, but to upgrade little by little.

I would say that those of us that choose our AR-15s piece by piece squeeze every drop of enjoyment out of our rifles that we possibly can because of the effort we put forth to get the EXACT rifle we want. That's not to say buying a complete AR-15 isn't fun. I'm just saying shopping is half the fun.

If you spend time researching the plethora of parts available for your build you can build a rifle that rivals the expensive manufacturers' rifles. You can spread out the costs over time. You'd likely have to spread them out over time as parts are becoming tougher to find as the demand skyrockets. You can also save money. After all, it does cost a manufacturer money to have an employee assemble a rifle...

Finally, you can go from not knowing anything to knowing a lot by researching the different options. You have to start somewhere. It's not for everyone and if you decide building one isn't for you then a stock rifle will be just fine. You won't be unhappy if you don't really want to go through all the work. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. Also, like someone already pointed out, you'd spend more money by buying a stock rifle and upgrading it later.

Have fun. Black rifles are addicting. This won't be your only black rifle.
