Wow, thanks everyone! I am leaning for something in 9mm Luger although I wouldn't mind a 38 or 357 as I already reload 45acp, 45 colt, 30/06 and 223. I will have to check out the Rugers, I like the larger end of the compact spectrum or even a decent revolver. By no means is this going to be my only pistol as I already have a Colt 1911 and Single Action Army that were handed down to me, along with a Whitney Wolverine and an old FIE 22LR revolver. It will just be something to remember my 21st by and have some fun on the range, but may end up as a carry gun down the line if the bill fits.

Thanks again everyone! This is the reason I love this forum!

There was a review of the 9mm SCCY CPX-2 in the last issue of Combat Handguns. Do a search and you will find s few more reviews, all seem positive, here is a link to basic info.
http://www.sccy.com/

Suggested retail is $299 and I have seen a few new in the $240-$260 price range.

I bought a Hipoint 40S&W a month or so ago from cheaperthandirt. With shipping, and the $25 transfer fee, I have about $175 into it. Sure it's sorta ugly, a little on the heavy side...but it's cheap. It has some issues feeding hollowpoints, and also some issues feeding if I throw more than 6 or so FMJ in the mag. I've been told that the mags with the orange followers are much better. I sent my two with green follower mags back to Hipoint and they swapped them out no questions asked. I only had to pay shipping to their location. Hope that fixes the feeding issues. I'll be testing these new mags within the next couple weeks.

Would I use this as a primary SD weapon? Probably not. As of right now I don't trust it to feed properly in a pinch, but it's fine for a plinking gun. I'll have a better feel for this after a little more range time.

Next purchase it probably going to be a Glock 20, with a 6" conversion barrel and maybe a 9x25 Dillon to boot. Damn guns are addicting.

Get something you can afford to shoot. Check the cost of ammo and range time. I started with an SR22, and quickly added a CZ82. Both go with me to the range.

... gonna be really tough, to beat that one! 8-)

I had this gun and knew two others that were at their happiest when they found someone to buy this gun from them. Trigger pull was terrible.........felt kinda goofy in your hand......lotta recoil, but I thought for the price, you can't beat it..............I was wrong  I like the Ruger idea myself.............

One thing I would like to say is that if you are shopping for this pistol (S&W SD9VE or SD40VE) that it looks almost identical to the older Sigma (SW9VE or SW40VE). Basically, the hangun pictured above is the exact same save for two noticable differences from the Sigma: The texture on the grip is different, and S&W updated (improved) the trigger design.

I just purchased a SD9VE about a week ago and took it out to put a few rounds through it. It is not by any means a high-end pistol, but its a smooth shooter, fed reliably, no FTF or FTE, and the trigger, while on the heavy end, is smooth and accurate shooting is easily attainable. At about 10 yards, I could keep every single round on a half-gallon milk jug. Overall, I am very pleased with S&W's reintroduction and improvement of the Sigma.

IMHO, I think the Ruger SR9/40's got the best trigger (of that kind) than any XD, M&P, whatever ... 'sept Glock! :o ... even then, a new 3.5 lbs connector and minor polishing not withstanding, I'd say they're very close!

If yer talkin' about a P89/94/95/whatever ... if ya thought the SD trigger was bad?! :? ...

No help to ya ... but I recently bought a "Pro" M&P ... trigger was noticeably better than the non-"Pro" ... I still (immediately) spent 'nother $100+ to replace the trigger!

Yer simply not gonna get a pistol much under $900 that's got a "nice" trigger! (bear in mind, most folks' idea of "nice", varies ... wildly!) Regardless, ya can spend $500+ on something, and then 'nother $100 - $150, and end up with a "purdy nice" trigger ... which, is what a lotta guys (who compete) do!

Fer $300, that S&W is gonna be head 'n shoulders above most anything else (in that price range) ... but ... oddly 'nuff, if ya cough up 'nother $100+, ya can get a Ruger SR9/40 ... and get a very comparable pistol, but with a much nicer trigger!

Ya want a really nice gun?! ... with a really nice trigger?! ... fer under $500?! ... ya can get these fer 'bout $450, brand new ... http://www.galleryofguns.com/genie/Default.aspx?item=0306&mfg=Ruger 8-)

If you're poor I'd get a .22, since you'll be able to afford to actually shoot it then.

Find a cheap/used Ruger MK1, 2, or 3.

That blackhawk is an idea that I could get behind! Mind you the normal cash flow isn't a problem, it's just the fact that I didn't plan ahead and save so that I could buy something worthwhile on my 21st while still having money left for bills, gas, and the house payment lol. Possibly I will just save for an extra check or two and buy that 357 :D 8-) yes... That would do nicely!

I was going to suggest ... if ya had a credit card, GOG let's ya put a "deposit" (1/3ish?!) online, and they ship to yer dealer of choice ... they also send yer dealer a check fer yer "deposit" amount (I have no clue why, 'cause he's gotta pay them more than that fer the gun, anyhow :? ) ... and the dealer collects the rest from ya, when ya come to get it ... I was gonna suggest, if ya contact yer dealer of choice, and ask nicely, he'd probly hold the gun fer ya, whilst ya save up the rest (kinda like layaway) ... then, ya could be sure to get yer gun of choice, 'fore they go outta stock! 8-)

However, upon clicking the link to see how many they had left, to see if it was a valid concern ... I see they're now outta stock! :(

FWIW, I do highly recommend the 4 5/8in bbl ... it handles QUITE nicely ... and still very accurate!

ETA: if they're otherwise in-stock, my own preference'd be fer .45 Colt ... ammo's more than .38 ... but, ya could take Oldman up on his reloading offer ... fer the cost of a few boxes of cartridges, ya could get a Lee Hand Press Kit, and a set of dies, clean the cases with steel wool, and shoot fer the cost of cast bullets, primers, and a skosh of powder! Image

... bonus points if ya can save up one more check, and get a dual-cylinder .45acp/.45 Colt model! ;) ('fore ya ask, I wouldn't bother with the dual-cylinder 9mm/.357 ... bore's too wide fer 9mm to shoot well ... 'er so I've heard :? )

If you can save yourself another $100-$150 you can get into a used Glock or similar gun. Can't go wrong there.

If you are looking for a recreational gun (as opposed to self defense) I'd suggest the Ruger Mk3 or similar.

Already have an old Single Action Army in 45LC and 1911 in 45Auto and reload for both, so the idea for a dual cylinder gun might just rub off. :D now if only I could find one with a 4 1/2" barrel ;) We would be set!

You've got some good advice so far. My recommendation is save alittle longer and get some a lot nicer. Even an extra $100 would open up your options greatly to buy a quality used handgun from the big names. Not say a hi point, Jennings, Davis, sigma etc are bad, but they are deffinately upgrades by getting a Glock, sig, beretta, M&P etc. Also if you are patient used stuff that is cosmetically beat up does surface if you know where to look. I buy a lot of used glocks to either convert, fix up, or have as class inventory training guns. I have never paid more then $250 for a used Glock and won't, some have also been much less then that. Some of them have some serious holster wear and look like crap, but shoot straight and run like a sewing machine, looks can be deceiving. I'm not saying Glock is end all be all, be with LE trade ins there is a heck of a lot of gun to be had for the money. And for the record, my Glock purchases have been retail, not an insider price or anything.

Even trade in berettas, and sigs show up. Recently there was a German made sig 226 for sale for $385. I kinda wish I would have bought it but this gun was used, finish worn, rattled like marbles in a jar but I'm sure it would have shot ok.

Good luck with your choice, but remember your first gun you'll probably always hang on to, get something you will want for a lifetime even if it means saving up for another month or two. My first handgun is something that I thought was cool at the time but unpractical. Friends told me don't buy it and even though it wasn't garbage, once I got other stuff I never shot it and eventually sold it. So I had a mulligan and will never sell that pistol but if I could have done it differently I would have and not haven to taken a loss. Granted I knew it wouldn't be my only anyways :D

Take care
