Never underestimate the depth of human depravity. Your paradigm for reality is not shared by many people in this world, they look at taking a life the same way you look at stepping on an ant.

Not saying this applies to this guy, he is probably insane... But the point is, you should never judge what a human can do based on what YOU could do. Just look at Africa.

This tragedy is simply that, a tragedy. Teenagers die all the time as a result of making bad choices.

To lock this guy up to prevent him from shooting other future home invaders seems like a waste of money.

In Texas, this would be a non-story. "Were they trespassing? Yes. Case dismissed."

In MN, they will probably count the bullets and make his facebook page public. This man will suffer the consequences of the teens actions, one way or another.

I watched KARE 11 news last night and they mentioned the case. They had the large picture of the two teens and said when the funeral was (the family is combining the funerals), then mentioned that they were "shot to death" by the old due (cue mugshot). They briefly mentioned that they kids broke into the guy's house before going to the next story but it would've been easy to miss. If you were on the computer or in the kitchen or otherwise occupied when the news was on, you probably would've thought they they were just another couple of kids with bright futures who were taken in a tragic accident.

Of course our local news outlets have a bias and an agenda. Fortunately it's so obvious that only the willing are fooled by it.

Teens Killed in Little Falls on Thanksgiving Linked to Previous Burglary

Authorities have confirmed that the two teens who were killed during an alleged break-in in Little Falls have been linked to another burglary.

According to our partners at KARE 11, the Morrison County Sheriff stated in a written release that a search of the teens' red Mitsubishi Eclipse revealed items that had been reported stolen in a separate burglary just south of Little Falls.

That homeowner reported numerous items were missing from the home including several bottles of prescription medication.

Officials say during the search of the teens' car, they found six bottles of prescription medication with the name of the burglarized homeowner.

18 year old Haile Kifer and 17 year old Nicholas Brady were killed after they allegedly broke into 64 year old Byron David Smith's home on Thanksgiving.

Smith has been charged with two counts of second degree murder. Smith allegedly told authorities that he killed both teens with multiple gun shots.

I wonder what will happen to the old man. Maybe a plea deal down to manslaughter (not saying this news changes anything)?

To me the biggest mistake he made was not calling 911 after shooting the intruders. That is what is going to get him convicted.

You know, just because the two kids were criminals doesn't make it not murder.

I think "clean finishing shot" and "I wanted him dead" will help with that as well.

Now that they are linked to a previous burglary, including prescription drugs, will that change the severity of his sentence?

Why should it?

Asking... because I'm reading from a lot of folks in Texas that if it happened there it would be dismissed.

You break in and get shot, that's your dumb arse fault... don't break into people's homes. Think about it, had they not been there in the first place they'd be alive and well posting on Facebook today how much their teacher sucks or whatever teens talk about now days, and this guy wouldn't be facing a murder charge or two. It's not like he went looking for trouble, trouble broke into his home and came down the steps to greet him.

Yep, and he meet that trouble with lawful force, up until he shot them while they were no longer a threat. I have no problem with him shooting these criminals, the issue comes when he executed (for lack of a better word) them.
