reloading sabot slugs?

Postby EJSG19 on Sat Dec 08, 2012 11:13 pm

My experience is in metallic reloading only.

Bought my first rifled bbl for a shotgun. First: can sabot slugs be effectively reloaded? Second: is it worth it?

Interpret those questions in as many ways as needed.

I was looking into a couple years back.

The big thing is going to be a roll crimp die for a drill.

Since I don't have a place I want to dedicate to reloading at the moment, I haven't gone past the youtubing stage to see how others do the roll crimp.

I have a press for doing all the other steps though.

I have a smooth-bore slug barrel though as I like to use mine for buckshot too.

I have all my components for reloading 00 buckshot though. That's using Blue Dot. I should set-up the press this winter to work on that.

(this is as much a tag to see how others are doing it though)

Another member and I got into it. I have the lee 1oz mold. It is made for smooth or rifled. I crimp just like normal he has a roll crimp tool. Accuracy is good and they are wicked cheap!! If you are buying slugs(to reload) it may not pay.

Do you have a source for slugs and sabots? I wouldn't waste my time reloading rifled slugs.
I will never apologize for being an American.

reloading sabot slugs?

What's your goal? Better accuracy than factory? Saving money? Just because?

I would not reload something I'd only shoot 10-20 rounds a year. You may shoot more slugs than that. I don't.

All of the above, but one didn't know if you even could do it, and two being a different animal if you can play with the recipe enough to tailor a load for your gun to be more accurate than factory.

I'd have to use a favor from a buddy if I did. Sighting in and load development would be the big use of ammo. Hunting would not justify purchasing the whole setup. But if it was worth the effort I can go use a friends press.

you can find a cheap single stage press for well under $40-50 to load slugs with. Especially at that low a volume. The same equipment is used for slugs as any other type of reloading.

You can fold crimp a slug too or you can roll crimp.

Who makes 12ga shell plates and dies?? Are you sure they are 7/8-14 thread like other dies? Just curious since 12ga is only a c**t hair smaller than 7/8"-14 minor dia.

Go with a MEC, easy to use and work well. I have a 600JR and a 9000G. I use the 600 of odd ball stuff like slugs and heavy charges of shot. The 9000 is set up for 1 1/8oz.

You can get a used MEC pretty cheap.

please tell me you are not that ignorant to think you would still load in a metallic press.....

Because if you are....you deserve the full wrath of the reloading troll.

I have wanted to try these for a while. The Lee is working well so far and I don't hunt so I have never looked into them much. I was thinking about getting a 50cal mold to go with the sabots... Maybe some day.

Lyman sells a mold that allows you to use a regular shotgun wad as a sort of sabot for reloading "sabot slugs"- I have never done this personally, but know a couple of guys who do. The results were not too bad out of a smoothbore barrel. They were doing this to get the price down for 3 gun shooting. These loads were using regular fold crimp as opposed to roll crimping.

BPI (a local outfit) sells some sabots to use with .50 bullets for sabot slugs. BP does a pretty good job with all things shotgun, so I would tend to believe that it works fairly well. This is the source of the sabots you found in the Midway catalog/web site. I have not done this, as I have done fairly well with Federal's and Winchester's offerings with my deer gun, and it is not worth the time to work this up (for me) for the 5-10 rounds I put through that gun annually.

There are also the old fashioned Forster and shuttlecock style slugs that you can load with roll crimping. I did try this and the results really underwhelmed me for the amount of effort, and I buy the Remington LE reduced recoil slugs for 3 gun shooting.

If you are interested in slug reloading, I would recommend looking at Ballistic Product's website (they are in Corcoran MN) and getting their slug reloading manual.

If I was going to re do this, I probably would just get the Lyman slugs and be done with it, rather than all the other work.
