Another School Shooting

I think these things are becoming more common because the lust to be "famous" has pervaded the American psyche, so for those without consciences it has become more of a motivator in how they act out.

The irony is that there are so many shootings lately, I sometimes have to mentally strain (aka "Google") to recall who actually did which one.

Pretty soon, to be known in this realm, someone will probably make a deck of mass murderer trading cards to be sold next to the "Magic The Gathering Dark Ascension" cards I marveled at yesterday, at a Target checkout lane.

Someday, some archaeologist will look back at this generation and have a lot to say about our interests and priorities, I'm sure.

That's what needs to be done, short of letting teachers carry. Meanwhile, keep posting those "gun free" zone signs everywhere. That way, the wackos know where to go to do the most damage.

How does one go about helping the mentally ill? If they can't help themselves. Force medicate? Even if they refuse treatment. Asking seriously here. If something needs to be done better, what is it?

I find it hard to believe that these evil mass murderers are not responsible for their behavior. They plan their crimes, gather weapons and dress for their attack while keeping their plan secret.Then the travel to the site of their attack hiding the weapons and their intentions. These are behaviors of a calculating not a person out of control. Just because a person has urges doesn't mean they are not aware of the evilness of their deeds. We need swift and sure public punishment for these monsters. I believe that a public execution a week after the act would do much to deter the Hasans and Aurora shooters out there.

True - but I think the shooter got killed in that one and none of the police were killed? I could be wrong

I'm sure the average teacher has no interest in carrying a gun at work, but I think some or all should start...I was seriously worried about security when I dropped my 4yr old off at pre-school for the 1st time at a local middle school...there is basically zero security that I could see.
I'd rather see cops protecting our schools than running radar on the highways

Take away the stigma so they aren't told what losers they are repeatedly so they stop believing it and trying to find the one way they can leave life and make a mark.

Every time someone says they are responsible for their actions, it just takes that much longer to get them the help they need.

Well.. I meant 'you' as the generic 'you', was not making it personal to Heffay or inferring anything like that.

You still have it wrong saying they are responsible for their actions. They aren't, any more than a cancer patient is responsible for the effects of his cancer.

That is the attitude that needs to change. You're just perpetuating the stigma. They may have to live with the consequences of their illness, but they aren't responsible for it. You're just going to make them feel bad about their condition and withdraw, which is the exact opposite of what needs to happen.

"What is wrong with you? Get out of that wheelchair. It's all in your mind!"

Cancer and mental illness are very different, in many cases "mental illness" has no pathology and is not really a disease per se.
Pathology is essentially what "proves" disease, it's four part are: cause/etiology, mechanisms of development (pathogenesis), structural alterations of cells (morphologic changes), and the consequences of changes (clinical manifestations).

Additionally, there are many different levels of "mental illness" and only the most severe cause someone not to be able to stop from killing a school full of kids, i.e., severe schizophrenia.

By how aggressively you are defending the mentally ill I fully expect to to retract you condemnation of the Little Falls shooter. He obviously was mentally ill for using a .22 and not calling the police for a day.

The mentally ill are not responsible for their actions. But they do have to deal with the consequences of them.

It's entirely possible for there to be multiple victims. Just like in any event, it's possible for multiple people to be at fault. Case in point: Zimmerman vs Martin.

Nice job portraying the mentally ill as not being as legitimately sick as cancer patients. You are part of the problem. Deny it all you want, but they have their own issues to deal with.

I find it sick that you don't think the mentally ill deserve sympathy. Again.. part of the problem, not part of the solution.

By the way, find me the post where I "condemned" the Little Falls shooter. This should be fun, in a "I'm ignorant and totally don't understand what's going on" sort of way. And by fun, I mean just pathetically sad.

Heffay you are lumping all mentally ill people together and doing a disservice to the stigma you want to eradicate by blaming what appear to be the volitional acts of a competent young man on "mental illness" - that's a pretty broad brush you are painting with.

If he had a severe mental illness and could not appreciate the nature and consequences of his actions that's one thing, but so far I've only heard he may have had aspergers, which is not an illness that causes distortion in perception of reality or causes one to not know right from wrong.

All mentally ill people deserve our sympathy and support, but when they intentionally harm others (or intentionally set in motion a chain of events that leads to harm) they cross the line and deserve to be in jail.

Horrible ..I was just about to head out the door to work when pulled up kare11 on my phone to check the weather,and seen the news.I can't imagine someone doing this.My thoughts and prayers to the families.
