Need a safe mover

Postby lucycan on Wed Dec 12, 2012 9:01 am

My BigHorn is being delivered on Friday. Need a mover to get it to the basement. Thought I had one but they just backed out.

Thanks!

I moved my 48 gun 650lb safe up 2 steps from the garage down 10 steps to the basement all on my lonesome. It was probably something to watch. Broke the bottom step but not a scratch on the safe.

FYI Manny's was here today and did an amazing job. Very courteous, careful, and inexpensive. I'd highly recommend them.

Lucycan, would you mind posting some details of the job and what they ended up charging for it? How many steps, how big/heavy of a safe, general area of MN etc? I may be in the market for a safe mover again soon.

Thanks,
Erik

Refrig cart with smaller wheels than most 2-wheel carts are easier to pivot up to move. Strap on tight !! Some have accessory wheels on back to limit amount of tilt. For going down steps, or up, be sure to get the ones with roller belt on lower back side to make easier to slide down or up. BIggest thing to remember is to NOT let it get away from you or you will be hurt.
A 4-wheel furniture cart works well for moving inside on level surfaces, use refrig cart to lift and tip onto cart.

I moved two 805 pound safes this way in June, with two great guys helping.

Yep, appliance dolly with a couple football players will work.
But, professional movers will probably have better equipment, and be safer.

The job was to move my Bighorn 6039 from the garage to the basement. One flight of steps. 830 lb safe. SW Metro.

They put it on a carpeted "sled" and quickly moved it through the front door and down the steps. Took them maybe 45 min from start to finish.

Job was $225. I had quotes as high as $400.

AAA, which is who Gander Mountain uses, wanted $375.

Several local moving companies declined the work stating 500 lbs was their limit.

That sounds like a good price for the job. I used AAA some years ago when I got my last safe and they did a good job, but it sounds like their prices aren't too competitive anymore. Will definitely check out Manny's next time. Thanks for the info.

+1 for Manny's. My safe is about 1100lbs, moved from the garage up 3 steps to the front door, then up13 steps to the second floor. Took Manny and two of his guys to do it, but they still did it for $225. Manny would be my first call if I had need of his services again.

Very careful and safe guys, bonded, insured, and a professional job.

Remember, for the price with a pro, he drops it and takes out a wall, it's on him.

That alone is worth it to me.

I always liked the couple of cases of beer and some good buddies approach for anything too heavy for one person to move. When we moved my safe I used a mechanical winch and atv ramps to get it up the steps, it was surprisingly easier than I expected.

Sure. Trussed floor, right next to an outside wall.

Better than the basement and better than the first floor where someone could see it.
