I carry a CRKT M-16 I got at Sportsmans Warehouse for $35. I'm on my third one over the years because I keep losing them. Total one handed operation and one of the fastest opens I've seen in a pocket knife.

I also have this knife that gets a lot of wear and use. Holds an edge really well and I like the positive lock function. I also carry an older Schrade that was made in the US that is came with a hollow ground blade that holds an edge really well and does wonders when gutting a deer.

Reasonable price, durable, has held an edge well.

I concur. I have had a little 2" one for a couple of years that I absolutely love. It's thin, holds an edge well, locking blade and was $12.95 at Gander.

But I've seemed to have misplaced it this week.

My two choices ... ahh dang... three choices... are:

For a self defense blade in quick action the Kershaw Ken Onion Leek - love this one:

I removed the lock thing from mine since it defeats the purpose...

For a Polish American Geek like myself who needs a screwdriver and a torx bit once in a while (this has a VERY FAST flip open blade too) Leatherman e306x or e307x: http://www.leatherman.com/products/kniv ... efault.asp

This is one sweet package. Only downfall is that it is a little fat to carry in your pocket unless you have carpenters pants and have the thigh pocket.

And of course the little stuff:

anger burns and fills with hatred - wreaks havoc on the soul - what goes out comes back three fold - end it now

I've got a Gerber Mini Covert. I can open/close it with one hand. It works great on envelopes and cardboard boxes. I think it was about $40 bucks.

Based on all the replies and various recommendations, I think you should just start buying knives on a regular basis.

If you are going to attempt to use it for self defense, as opposed to slicing apples and paring your toenails, then get a fixed blade.............

I only have one fixed blade (a benchmade Nimravus) and I have to say, if I were going to a knife fight (and I couldn't bring a gun), I'd bring that one. Nothing feels quite like it. Anyway, I'm still being a shill for Kershaw, and the Boa in particular.
