Shooting Accuracy Training

Postby cmj685 on Thu Jul 17, 2008 12:39 pm

So I was recently reading a couple websites of some of the "big guys" in competitive shooting. I ran into concepts like "calling your shots", following the sight picture all the way through recoil, etc. These were all completely new concepts to me. I realized that, as a wholly self-trained shooter, I know nothing about actually shooting for pure accuracy. It seems to me that, in competitive shooting, accuracy is the first fundamental, and yet I see very little offered in that vein. I realize that there are some differences between combat shooting, and even competitive shooting like IDPA, and absolute bulls-eye accuracy shooting. But I actually might be interested in taking a course which does not major in tactical stuff (which I am really interested in as well) but in the fundamentals of handgun shooting for accuracy. I don't necessarily want to start at the very beginning (this is a gun, this is the trigger...), or at least I would like the very beginning to go fast to get on with things more advanced. I am not sure where to turn? I don't even know if the nationally famous places really offer this kind of thing, or at least, all you ever hear of is their tactical stuff. So, two questions: 1) can anyone recommend a cutting edge book on shooting a handgun for accuracy? 2) anyone know of someone who specializes in training in this way? Thanks for any and all suggestions.
I do not believe in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance.

Here is a couple of resources

http://www.guntalk.tv/ there are free ones and there are subscription tutorials

go check the protips on http://www.shootingusa.com there are some streaming videos there too or the transcripts of the shows. One of the AMU guys did a neat one on calling shots a while back....

We will be covering a lot of these concepts in the Competitive Shooting class in September! They do apply to IPSC & IDPA shooting as well as Bullseye!

Nor will piss poor equipment! It's funny how everything is just fine at home but on the line it falls apart, doesn't work or is just not what you needed at the moment... but it is the best way to shake down your equipment and your mindset. Today I learned that I need a new belt and a better designed holster. Good news is both issues will be fixed by next time.

Well, since CMJ said "I know nothing about shooting for pure accuracy", I'd have to say he does. :)

Practice is important, but if you don't have the technique you need, or you 'hit the wall' while self-learning, it's also important to get help. :)

Yeah, I'd say training (good, comprehensive, concentrated training) is even more important than practice. Not saying practice isn't important; just that having those fundamentals and knowing how to practice rank waaaay up there.

I would love to see how you can see what you do wrong, if you don't video tape yourself.
