Dakota County Sheriff promotes "assault weapons" ban

Postby mgobel on Mon Jan 07, 2013 9:53 am

Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows said yesterday that he supports a ban on the sale of high-capacity assault weapons.

"I believe in the second amendment,” Bellows told Patch Friday morning, three weeks to the day after the Newtown, CT, massacre in which 20 children were killed. “I’ve signed, over the years, 9,000 permits to carry" firearms.

“But does the second amendment extend all the way to assault weapons and high-capacity magazines?" Bellows asked. "I don’t think it does.”

At least the Sheriff is an elected official.

So what he is saying is he supports our right to defend ourselves from the criminal element but not a criminal government.
I will never apologize for being an American.

So to be clear, Dakota County won't allow its officers to carry "high capacity" mags and we wont find "assault rifles" in their squads?

No?

Bellows is darn near Gudmundson 2.0, he may be a little better about P2C's, but he's no Sheriff Richard Mack.

I guess not...

Where the hell did you get that idea? Also where the hell were all the pro-gun folks when Mitch Scott was trying to get elected in 2010?

Dave Bellows has been Gudmundson’s chief deputy since 2000, and took over the Sheriff’s position in February, amidst accusations of “back-room dealing”. I’ve met (current) Sheriff Bellows a few times. Nice enough guy, very political. However, he started off his campaign against challenger Mitch Scott on a less than virtuous path.

When word got out that Apple Valley police sergeant Mitch Scott was going to be running for Dakota County Sheriff, Dave Bellows quickly went online and purchased “mitchscottforsheriff.com” ( Mitch’s official domain – mitchscottforsheriff.org)
What Mr. Bellows planned on doing with the domain is anyone’s guess. He could have been cyber-squatting (which is illegal by-the-way Sheriff), planning a smear website, etc. What I can tell you is that his “official” reason is bogus…

“I heard he was thinking of running, and this was my way of determining if he was going to run or not,” “If someone goes to use it, you’re notified.”

As a bit of an internet guy, I can tell you that’s complete B.S.
When you buy a domain, no one else can use it. It’s yours. You don’t get “notified”, because it’s yours. If you want to know if someone is running for office, how about a polite phone call? Seems better than buying up potential campaign domain names.

Bellows admitted registering the domain, and stated he regretted doing so. He has since released his registration.

“His behavior shows a lack of integrity …We’re in law enforcement; ethics and integrity should be above all.” -Mitch Scott

There is also some suspicion about a caller impersonating Mitch Scott cancelling reservations for a fundraiser…

“The American Legion called to confirm that I was going to cancel, and I told them I didn’t understand what they were talking about. They said they got a call from someone who said they were me and canceling the event,” Scott said.

Bellows denies the implication.

Ahhh, but they are the "Authorities" and the 2nd ammendment does not apply to them any way. So yes they will have them....to protect you after you call them....minutes later of course and probably too late.
But then, maybe they can fire them in a 21 gun salute to you when you get layed to rest...right?? probably not. :x

IIRC, Mitch Scott took the GOCRA pledge to stand up for permit holders. Bellows did not.

GOCRA-PAC (the Gun Owners Civil Rights Alliance Political Action Committee) is strongly endorsing the following candidates for sheriff in their respective counties:
[...]
Mitch Scott in Dakota County

http://mitchscottforsheriff.org/

By reputation a solid, service-oriented street cop who has gone on to get both his BA and MA in administration, Mitch Scott, a sergeant in the Apple Valley Police Department, is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and the Minnesota Citizens Personal Protection Act. His own pledge is a breath of fresh air in Dakota County, because, according to the figures that the Dakota County Sheriff's Office itself has provided to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Dakota County has amassed almost half a million dollars in excess carry permit application fees, which can, by law, be used only to administer their carry permit program. Scott, like Bostrom, has promised to audit the books when he takes office.

Scott is running against Sheriff Dave Bellows, who GOCRA-PAC has declined to endorse.

Where do we send money to kick this guy (Bellows) ass to the curb in the next election?
They don't get to do that in North Korea do they.
Seriously, is anyone running against this guy....It's amazing how much money can be raised
online in small amounts.

When the permit to carry law passed he was very anti-conceal carry, then when people started applying for their carry permits in his county, alot of money were flowing in. So after he realized that there was money to be made he became very pro-conceal carry.

So in other words, he was for the 2nd Amendment before he was against it. Might be a good time for him to review 2A and how it related to the revolutionary war. While he's at it maybe come out in support of prohibition because that will elliminate drunk driving.

So. Who are we voting for next election? I think anyone would do at this point.
