2013 is starting with a bang!!

Postby XDM45 on Mon Jan 07, 2013 11:08 pm

In a recent thread called "New Years - New Guns"http://www.mnguntalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=37339 I said I was planning on getting a few things this year..... well, tonight that list got much shorter. My text from that post is in bold and the plain text after it is an update.

6 more mags for my XDm - Done. bought it.
6 more mags for my 22/45 - Done. bought it.
10,000 more rounds for my 22/45 - Done. bought it, although I opted for only 5.250 rounds for now. I'll get the other half later on.
1,000-2,000 rounds .45ACP target ammo (If I wasn't married, I'd buy 10,000 rounds) - Done. bought 2,000 of my favorite MagTech.
1,000 hollow point defense ammo in .45ACP - Realized I didn't need that many (vs. want), so I bought 40 rounds.
Springfield XDs with 2 mags - Soon. I'll have this by mid-year. I could have bought it now, but meh, it gives me something to wait for.
..and I'm ball parking that at all around $2,500-3,000, which isn't much. - I was close. I spent $1,535.38 tonight.

I figure the XDS will cost me $700, probably $60-150 for a holster, so that would bring it up to about $850 more, but including tax and whatnot, let's just make it an even $1,000, so that's $2,535.38 and actually on the low side of my estimate.

If I wasn't a married guy, I'd buy the XDS now, and a buttload more ammo.

I'll tell you what though, .22LR is hard to find these days, but then again is is .45ACP. I know .224/5.56 is too, but I don't use that, but I know it's hard to find too.

Here's the breakdown:

Put your money where your mouth is, huh? Not sure how much you have run your defense ammo, but I recall from years ago that you should test each type prior to carry...is 40 rounds enough?

I am off my butt as well.

PTC class in progress.
Backordered 1000 rounds of 9mm practice ammo.
Organized my stuff and realized I have over 900 rounds of 9mm and a few hundred .40cal practice ammo and a hundred or so rounds of each in hydrashok.
Ordered 4 G19 mags (no g27 mags after I organized and saw I have 7 mags in various capacity).
Looking at what 22 I will buy.

You are well on your way too it seems.

As for the .22LR, get the Federal rod box stuff with 525 rounds if you can get it. 40gr. It's the stuff I bought above.

Yeah, I do test the HP ammo. I have 20 rounds right now, 409 should do it. I'd like to get 1,000 HP rounds, but yikers....$620 for that and I just don't shoot it often enough. I'd rather buy smaller amounts. If the Zombie Apocalypse happens (basically it's a metaphor meaning if you are prepared for that, you're prepared for anything), I'll toss ball ammo down the pipe even though it's not ideal., it'd take out the threat.

Man, you need to start reloading. Had you spent the money on reloading equipment and components, you would have a secure stream of ammo. .45ACP is about the easiest round to reload...........put 750 rounds of .45 HP in GI ammo cans on Sunday. 2,000 .223 rounds over Christmas in FMJ and HP over several evenings.

Right now, reloading is a pain because of the panic, but buying on sale and exploring pulldown surplus powder during normal times can give you some pretty cheap ammo.

True that... and I may get into it, but there's also a time issue. I don't shoot a ton, especially of the .45ACP. I'm stockpiling too.

I don't know if a two case per year shooter really makes sense to start reloading, unless you are in a league or shoot more than a couple boxes a month it's hard to get a positive return for the cash + time investment required.

Getting reloading componnets isn't much easier than buying loaded ammo right now (small pistol primers anyone... cheap pull down powder or projectiles...). You are still beholden to the supply chain if you don't already have stuff on hand, when ammo is hard to get so is powder, primers and cheap brass/bullets for reloaders.

I tend to agree with you. In anotehr thread, someone asked how much people shoot each time, here's my answers from that thread.... and as you can see, right now anyway, I wouldn't really get my cash out of it in reloading. I track the date I shot, range I was at, date I cleaned the gun, caliber shot and rounds shot in each, etc. It's all tracked in an Excel spreadsheet.

Since 04/21/2012 (my first trip to the range) until 01/05/2013 (my 18th trip to the range), I've shot a total of 4,550 rounds of .45ACP and 5,200 .22LR, for a combined total of 9,750 shots fired. All new ammo. No reloads.

Least rounds fired in a session for .45ACP = 50
Most rounds fired in a session for .45ACP = 600
Average rounds fired in a session for .45ACP = 200

Least rounds fired in a session for .22LR = 100
Most rounds fired in a session for .22LR = 650
Average rounds fired in a session for .22LR = 300

I shoot indoors and outdoors. I track how many rounds fired, at which range, on which date I shot and on which date I cleaned each gun. I also track any upgrades, modifications, etc, all of this and more in an Excel worksheet.

As for distance, usually 21 feet, sometimes 15, sometimes 25, sometimes 50, but usually 21 feet.

You should shoot more 22  Even getting a 9mm for practice would pay off at 12 cents plus per round savings.

Yeah, I plan on more .22LR being shot than .45ACP, but I shot so much .45ACP since I went for my PTC in 2012.

FINALLY!!!! my mags are shipping today. Once they arrive, I'll have a dozen mags for each firearm.

The .45ACP arrived a week or so ago, so now all I'm waiting on is the .22LR, which is due to arrive at Cabella's warehouse on 02/25/13, so I think it'll be early-mid March before I actually get it, but depending on if/when they get it, how many people are in line before me, it could be until at least April. I probably should have purchased more than the 5,250 I did. Ah well. Next time.
