President Obama to use MLK "traveling bible" at inaugural ceremony

When President Barack Obama takes the oath of office on Monday, he'll place his hand on a bible with deep roots in Alabama.
... a bible that was owned by the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

King used the bible during his time as pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. He also carried it with him as his "traveling bible," using on the road for inspiration and preparing sermons and speeches.

The symbolism is significant: Obama's ceremonial swearing in on the Capitol steps falls on MLK Day.

King's children said ...

“We know our father would be deeply moved to see President Obama take the Oath of Office using his bible,” the King family said in a statement. “His ‘traveling bible’ inspired him as he fought for freedom, justice and equality, and we hope it can be a source of strength for the President as he begins his second term."

MLK and His Guns

.... Most people think King would be the last person to own a gun. Yet in the mid-1950s, as the civil rights movement heated up, King kept firearms for self-protection. In fact, he even applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

A recipient of constant death threats, King had armed supporters take turns guarding his home and family. He had good reason to fear that the Klan in Alabama was targeting him for assassination.

William Worthy, a journalist who covered the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, reported that once, during a visit to King's parsonage, he went to sit down on an armchair in the living room and, to his surprise, almost sat on a loaded gun. Glenn Smiley, an adviser to King, described King's home as "an arsenal."

As I found researching my new book, Gunfight, in 1956, after King's house was bombed, King applied for a concealed carry permit in Alabama. The local police had discretion to determine who was a suitable person to carry firearms. King, a clergyman whose life was threatened daily, surely met the requirements of the law, but he was rejected nevertheless. At the time, the police used any wiggle room in the law to discriminate against African Americans.

Ironically, the concealed carry permit law in Alabama was promoted by the National Rifle Association thirty years earlier. Today, the gun rights hardliners fight to eliminate permits for concealed carry.....

You can be pro-handgun for self defense and still support AWB type legislation. This isn't irony. There are many shades of grey in this area.

The only shade of grey is the one you will have to wear if you are under armed at a time of need to protect yourself, your children, your wife, or other loved one when you are in a casket!

Nice rhetoric! Beautifully done! And it has nothing to do with the topic at hand. A masterful trolling stroke, if I may say so!

Should I infer from your comment you believe obama to be "pro-handgun for self defense"?
I'm pretty sure Dr King's arsenal included things that are now, or would be banned. Semi-auto rifles, and 'high capacity magazines' as an example.

Rhetoric? Well, if that is how you take it, like laws, interpretation is everything. Thank you so very much for the compliment! Being a retired baber with a good friend (now deceased) that was a bit of a wordsmith as well as living in George Leonard Herter's home county, I have learned to write and believe it or not I have a BS detector that goes off and sounds an alarm. This detector goes off so much that I had to take the batteries out of it ... and sometimes it still goes off! As for trolling, if there is another meaning other than a 4" Dardevle on a Muskie rod, you will have to fill me in on it. Perhaps, I should have included the rest of your response in quotes to help you follow along.

Oh, by the way, the real irony of the first post is the hipocrasy of the fearless leader, the commander of the fifth column.

No. I'm saying that using Dr. King as a pro-gun person based on his owning a firearm doesn't mean he wouldn't support "reasonable, common sense restrictions" like many hunters out there do. It's not irony for Obama to be using his bible, as their beliefs on guns may be very similar to each other.

This is a horrible thread and just makes the gun community (once again) look dumb. Herpa derpa Obammy wants my guns.

It isn't irony. It just means you have your head only part of the way up your ass.
Donald Trump got more fat women moving in one day than Michelle Obama did in eight years.

I'll go out on a limb and speculate that if Dr King had been set upon by a pickup load or two of the asshats in sheets and hoods, having an AR or similar at his disposal would have given him aid and comfort.
