That's nice. I'm going to start referring to magazines as clips from now on, because a) that's what they are now, and b) it tweaks you a lot. I can troll and be grammatically correct at the same time, and the angst will feed me and make me strong.

If you notice, I cited Merriam Webster. The people who define the words in the English language. Who say clip is an acceptably synonym for magazine. Whether you like it or not. But hey, if you think Merriam Webster now has a liberal anti-gun agenda, the tighten up that tinfoil hat! You're going to need it.

Languages change. You either adapt to the modern vernacular, or you look like a dinosaur.

I DID notice. The quote you cited (and I copied in my post) is from wikipedia. That fact that you also included the link to Merriam Webster is superfluous. In case you forgot what you wrote, I've included it for your review....

Heffay wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ammunition_clip

The term clip is commonly used to describe a firearm magazine, especially in newspapers, movies, and on television. Because of this usage, the Merriam-Webster dictionary now defines a clip as "a device to hold cartridges for charging the magazines of some rifles; also :a magazine from which ammunition is fed into the chamber of a firearm".

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/clip

Definition of CLIP

1: any of various devices that grip, clasp, or hook
2: a device to hold cartridges for charging the magazines of some rifles; also : a magazine from which ammunition is fed into the chamber of a firearm

Now, I hope we can put this magazine vs clip argument to bed. What a waste of time to argue it. It makes you look like an ass if you correct people.

That has got to be the dumbest thing I've seen on this forum in months. Superfluous??

This word... I don't think it means what you think it means.

A clip might technically be a mag now. But, if I hear someone say clip they just sound ignorant.

Personally, I think we SHOULD resist changing the meanings of words simply because so many people use them wrong. Just because so many people use a word wrong changes it's meaning? That to me is idiotic. Where does it end? Do we have to wait until we've dumbed-down our culture so much that we are drooling idiots calling ice cream cones, clips? Yes,I realize that's extreme but you get my point.

The same thing holds true for changing the spelling of words. Should we embrace changing the spelling of words because common culture is to lazy to use the right letters, all the letters or letters in the right order to spell something? Again, where does it end.

As for the word "superfluous" used earlier, I believe it was used correctly. That is, unless they changed the meaning of it on me since I learned what it meant so many years ago (which the way things are going, wouldn't surprise me).

Talking about the dumbing down of culture on this board is really amusing to me.

And where does it end? It NEVER DOES. Welcome to history of everything. At what point in time would you like to freeze all development?

And correcting one word time and time again when it has, like it or not, become a synonym makes you sound arrogant

So I have noticed lately you seem to like insulting this forum as a whole now and stopped singling out others. My question is this... If we are ALL so dumb and this forum is so dumb then why do you have over 6,000 posts? Just a thought.

I don't see any harm in correcting folks about proper terminology. I have had multiple people ask why my revolver has no safety. It sounds like a stupid question, but all I can do is calmly explain this to them and not be an ass about it.

In Minnesota, it is a Permit to Carry. A CCW implies that open carry is against the law.
Acceptable nomenclature for the thingy that holds cartridges for a Glock is NOT "clip".
An assault rifle is not what most people think it is.

Words matter. Get it right.
