Permit to Purchase

Hey all,

I went to the Apple Valley police department last week to apply for my permit to purchase license. I know they are probably really busy, but aren't they required by law to let me know if I got it within 7 days?

I would wait until the 10 day mark. They have 7 days to make the decision. If they make the decision on the 7th day, could take another day or two for it to make it through the mail. If you dont get it by Monday, then you should be concerned.

That is kind of what I was thinking. I already put the Ruger SR9 on hold at gander mountain, so hopefully it comes in the mail soon.

When I submitted the paperwork here in New Brighton on Jan. 2, the lady told me that I could expect it in the mail within 7 to 10 days. She also told me that if there was going to be a delay, that they would inform me of the issue via phone call. I received the PTP on Jan. 7, bought my gun that afternoon. Honestly, I thought it was going to be the full 7 to 10 days because of backlog, glad that wasn't the case.

Law says 7 calendar days. Only problem is that there is no recourse if they take longer, unlike with a PTC where they must issue within 30 days. My PTP from St Paul way back when took almost 45 days to get back, with no recourse.

That was 3 business days; Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and got it in the mail on the following Monday, the 7th. I was surprised.

No, the law says they have to either issue you the permit or inform you why it was denied in 7 days. Even Minneapolis gets this right, they make you wait but it's in your hand the 7th day from when you drop off the application. I'd actually start calling on Day 6 and let them know that you'd be happy to come down and pick it up if they haven't mailed it already.

I just read the law. They are required to give me the receipt which is the last page of the application. They didn't and now I'm wondering if that was on purpose.

Prior Lake they don't mail it to you. The two times I got mine I had to go pick it up.

Do you mean MLK Day? Presidents' Day is in February.

Im in mendota heights and they first told me the laws says they have 7 to 10 days. on the 7th day i called and was told by the same person they have 8 days to deny or issue. Later on the 7th day I emailed the chief of police and he said they have 7 business days. WTF???
Makes me wonder if they even know the law. I hate to make waves with the police but Im a little sick of government being above the law.
