Oakdale City Hall Council Chambers

I was there for all but the first few minutes.

Some local, and state politicians in attendance, but it was betty's show.
About 55-60 citizens - a full house for the council chambers.
80% 2A people (based on applause), 1 fudd (pretty quiet after he spoke, although there might have been some murmuring heard).
And a fair turn out from Oakdale Gun Club- at least 1/2 the crowd (including the fudd), judging by the comments, nods, and applause.

McCollum was about as dismissive of the turn out as she could be without going overboard: "... I realize how the power of social media can muster a big turn out at a short notice, and I want to have a dialog about the Second Amendment, but there are other topics to discuss..."
(actually there WASN'T much other discussion; there were only 2 or 3 people, of the more than dozen or so selected to speak, who didn't inquire rather pointedly, as their primary question, about her stance on the 2nd Amendment and her collaboration on the various gun laws being formulated.)

Some very reasoned and articulate speakers, and the one guy who was probably going to quit the NRA because they WE won't support a ban on >10 rd mags.

She said she has also " heard from the membership of the NRA, not just the leadership on TV," so she knows she's "...doing the right thing about supporting common sense legislation to prevent gun violence without threatening the Second Amendment..."

When she responded to questions concerning her stance on gun bans she opened her replies with: we need/ it's important/ I want- to have a dialog about the Second Amendment, and reducing gun violence... then promptly changed the subject to what ever other point or question was raised; the economy/ jobs/ drones/ Afghanistan...
She frequently tooted her own horn for having the in person meeting, as she pointed out many other politicians started doing teleconference town meetings in the aftermath of the Gabby Giffords shooting....but she was here, today because it's important to have a dialog and not just shut out the opposition...She did say she felt safer in the Oakdale City Hall than hosting a meeting at a shopping center. I asked why she felt that way, but she didn't answer...

Given that there were at least 2 video cameras recording- one on a tripod operated by someone who appeared to know what he was doing, and taking up prime isle space, as well as woman in the back of the room with a cell phone, I'd say there's the chance the event will show up perhaps on public access cable TV, or youtube...

Believe it or not, it does help to go to these things. You'll never change her mind about gun control, but she will notice the lack of support for her particular position. It will influence how hard she pushes for gun control. Since these meetings show that passion for implementing the AWB or clip limits is pretty much non-existent, she has no particular reason to get in front of it.

It's not about changing her mind. It's about getting her to not care about the issue. Tactical victories.

You're crazy if you think she won't get out in front on the gun control issue. She has NEVER seen a bit of anti-gun legislation that she didn't support. She may not be the one who drafts legislation in the house, but I'll guaran-damn-tee you she'll be one of the first to co-sponsor it.

Then why even bother trying with her? Enjoy wasting your time?

Quite honestly, a question I asked myself after the meeting.

I don't spend a lot of time around politicians, but McCollum impressed me as someone who is in so far over her head it's not funny.
She could not handle a room full of midwest rubes, much less the DC sharks.
If Obama is Santa, she is merely one of Santa's little helper.
As long as she keeps promising more free cheese, she'll continue to 'represent' the 4th district.

She conducted the meeting as though it was scripted, unable to engage, or offer any discussion of substance. Like most such meetings I suspect there were enough 'friendlies' ( we need jobs/ ...get out of Afghanistan) planted to be called on to deflect the great majority of opposition to her stance.
Other than making some new acquaintances, and shaking hands with a few like minded souls, I left with the thought it to be a waste of time.

She's up for re-election in 2014 and remembering the AWB of 94 with the 96 backlash, I suspect that a large pro group at a town hall meeting where she made several inane statements ... all of it filmed and available for sound bites ...

NOT a waste of time. It reminds them of consequences if only they'll open their eyes. There were other politicians in the room too ... I'm sure it was not lost on them that there was a large turnout on overnight notice ...

Thank you for attending!

You're probably correct about the state/ local pols in attendance. It was pretty clear they could read the room. Some where familiar, and even friendly with their constituents.
I went to the meeting as much out of curiosity, as opposed to thinking I'd make a difference, so I don't regret taking the time to be there. Maybe someday I'll be able to attend one hosted by somebody I voted for...

Translation: I'm disappointed that MY social media campaign was outdone by people who oppose my stance on a high visibility issue. As a result, we have to change the subject.

Where'd you learn to speak 'Betty'?
That is exactly what happened.

It's parent language is politician. There's a few subtle nuances to it, but they're typically pretty easy to pick up. It's kind of like the relationship of Norwegian to Swedish.

That's just to placate her constituents. The real lack of action won't be happening behind the scenes as she fails to try to get anyone to support the bills, and lets it die in committee.

Welcome to politics 101.
