5.7

Postby TooFewGuns on Tue Jan 29, 2013 12:01 am

I realize that asking about ammo availability right now is like asking if you passed a Sasquatch on the way to work but has anybody seen any 5.7 around? I'd like to be able to shoot my gun again some day. Is anybody loading it? Can the components be found?

I just found some for my buddy down in GA. The link to the seller is below. I don't know whether it's still active or not. I know he purchased $700 worth and that was last Wed.

FN is really the only people that do factory loads, and all the brass from what I understand, and last I checked they hadn't made any 5.7 in many many months. Auction sites will be your best bet.

Federal makes it as well, although it is just as rare

My advice it to hide the gun way back in your safe and pull it out in a year or two when the ammo is back

Yup - not a lot of people make that, unlike 9mm ammo that comes from practically any country on Earth. Plus you have to be a REAL weirdo to handload that stuff, and just looking at the base of the case with the relative size of the teeny case head and the SPP just gives me the willies. I can't even imagine what somebody weird enough to load that round would look like...

Oh wait, I got a picture here....

are you picking on disabled people?

Even if you wanted to handload 5.7x28 where are you going to find the components?

Also if anyone has a graph of 5.7x28 ammo availability that would be interesting. It seems to have gone from impossible to get, to almost as cheap as Russian surplus back to impossible+gold status.

Insane.

No, I'm picking on Rodentman because he's been bounced around a bit here in the Daycare Center, and just trying to send some love his way...

The round uses small pistol primers, you can find these cases by the TON at OGC because only Rodentman reloads them (seriously!!), and .224 caliber bullets are fairly common, so it's very doable.

Hey, I resemble that remark. I also resemble the photo. Yep, I reload 5.7 and it's time consuming but not really difficult. Gotta trim the brass, make sure you lube the brass as the setback of the neck is rather pronounced. Need to ream the primer pockets for proper seating. Don't plan on getting more than a few uses from the brass. It gets reworked a lot.

Loading the 5.7 is no more difficult than .22 hornet or any other .22 CF case, but the case prep is a pain in the butt.

The guns are pretty much all blowback designs (P/PS 90 and FiveseveN) and the cases stretch a bit. You will need to trim and full length size every time, and most if not all have crimped primers as they are principally military designs and made for full auto, so they worry about blowing out the primer in a blowback action at speed.

Rodentman is selling small pistol primers? How much and where do I get in line?

Edit: Took me a bit to realize you were talking about cases and not primers :(

Thanks, I think I will shove it to the dark recesses of my safe. I am reading some rumors from suppliers that say maybe by the middle of spring there will be factory ammo on the shelves.

You guys got me thinking. Ordered a bunch more .224 Nosler varmints and set up some brass to reload tmorrow. Figured I'd use up my Clarabela's points on something worthwhie since they have a $5 shipping special right now.

And thanks, Sam, for the love...

I don't reload, but will note that 5.7x28 ammo is trickling out, for those who know where to look and are patient.

Every so often Cabela's (web site) will list SS197 or accept backorders for it, and have delivered for me, most recently a few weeks ago (from an order 6 weeks earlier).
MidwayUSA recently had SS197 available for a short period.
Legacy Outdoors continues to accept backorders for both SS197 (http://www.legacyoutdoors.com/products/75197) and SS195, and says that they are getting in shipments of SS197 and filling orders in the order received, although SS195 availability seems less certain. I have yet to receive my orders from them.

Of note is that SS197 is now coming with lead-free primers, just like SS195 and SS198. FNH says that shelf life should be at least 10 years but nobody knows yet.

Worrying about shelf life with ammo in this panic is like worrying about shelf life of a bottle of whiskey at an Irish wake!!

Oh, dunno about them newfangled 5.7 rounds, but I continue to find fired RA 42 45 ACP cases at oakdale. never found a dud yet...
