I was just listening to the NPR program The Story with Dick Gordon and he had Joel Myrick as a guest. Myrick was the assistant principle of Pearl High School in 1997 when a 16 year old student walked in and started shooting (using a lever action rifle). Earlier, the boy had stabbed his mother to death. Myrick, who had a military background, went to his car and grabbed his Colt 45. On his way back to the school, he encountered the shooter, who got into his mother's car and started driving away. Apparently he was planning to go shoot up the junior high next. Myrick headed of the shooter and pointed the gun at him. This caused the boy to veer onto the grass and spin out. Myrick then forced the boy out of the car at gunpoint and held him until police apprehended him. This is a summation of what Myrick gleaned from this experience:
1. We live in a violent society and that will not change.
2. Banning certain guns or mags will not make our schools any safer.
3. The only way to stop shootings in our schools is to have good guys with guns.
4. Placing armed guards whose only job is security (not trying to catch kids smoking pot) in our schools will deter shooters from targeting schools.
