How to sell a rifle legally.

You send an email to me with your pre-marijuana induced scare pricing, we meet and we exchange.

Private sales are extremely deregulated. So long as you have no reason to believe the recipient is a felon you're fine.

Most people do a simple bill of sale with both partie's info. A lot of people will annoyingly demand to see "yeh paypahz" before they'll do a deal, to satisfy the felon thing, even though this is not legally required.

Good luck!

P.S. or just post the details in the marketplace section here. If you want any bites be reasonable with your asking price.

Ask to see a MN driver's license and ask them if they're prohibited from owning it. If both of those are okay, you can make a legal sale.

Some people choose to ask for a permit to purchase or a permit to carry but neither are required for a private sale to another MN resident. Others choose to complete bill of sales as well but that's not required either.

Also, be aware that shows and gun boards are currently being trolled by the anti-rights groups for video material. They'll post a WTB or something then once you meet, you'll be presented with a line such as "I probably wouldn't be able to pass a background check" or "I just got out of prison and need something to defend my home".

Don't give them anything to use against us!

Any evidence of this? Or even evidence of a case where something like this happened?

Anecdotally - our opponents have shown themselves adept at arranging shady purchases and then video-taping the whole affair. I've also had 3 close friends from this board call off sales recently because the buyers kept hinting they probably couldn't pass a background check.

I'm not saying don't engage in any sales -- just watch and listen to your buyer carefully.

Since it'll probably get flushed by the mods...I screen-capped. fcjf6464, if you're legit, and you modify your post...I'll remove my references to it.

Yea a newer member on here wanted to buy my .22 rifle. I know it's just a .22 rifle but with no PTC or PTP it just didn't feel right at times like these.

Is it an AR type? If its just a varmint rifle you don't even need a PTP in a store.

Because I moved to Wisconsin, I must transfer any of my sales thru a FFL dealer. I calculate that into my pricing and deliver to a dealer and pay the $20 transfer fee after being paid for the firearm. Purchaser is responsible for passing the NICS check. If they do not, the dealer will sell the firearm on consignment, subtract his fees, and give remaining to the purchasee. That said, be sure you can pass before committing to buy a firearm from me.

While not required for a private FTF, I've always required a MN DL and PTP/PTC as my personal requirement. Figure if you've got a Permit to Purchase a handgun or a Permit to Carry a handgun, you've satisfied the State of MN Good Guy requirements.

U=Yeah, I know it's not required for long guns, but thats just how I roll

Cool, so a bill of sale and a PTP and I'm good to go? I just want to protect myself in case its used illegally. Lets say its used illegally 10 yrs down the road, ect.

I always write up a bill of sale listing the date, manufacturer, model, caliber, serial number, sellers name, sellers number, sellers MN drivers license, sellers PTP/C, and the buyers info. I keep these on file to show that I sold X gun and it was no longer in my possession.

Unnecessary, but fine if it helps you sleep better. I sleep fine fully meeting the requirements of the law. And no more.

I have come around to this way of thinking myself.

As a buyer, I'm not comfortable with dropping all my id info someplace over which I have no knowledge or control.
If as a seller, I had concerns I'd pay the FFL transfer fees and be done with it.

Threads like this ought to be locked early, before sarcastic comments get posted that will undoubtedly be read out of context later. There are more than enough reputable and other sources on the net where a newbie may find the answer to his or her questions about buying or selling a gun in Minnesota and every other state. I suspect that even using the "search" function on this site would have resulted in numerous prior threads on the issue.

My two cents,
