Gander Mt

Postby Lights on Sun Feb 03, 2013 5:54 pm

Well I hate the place but stopped by the Woodbury store today to take a look at a gun I was thinking about buying. It is a little 9mm. The first thing the salesman tells me is you dont want that gun. I ask why. He said because we are out of 9mm ammo to sell you. I said I don't need any ammo. Then when he hands me the gun he muzzle sweeps me and the guy next to me. After I hand it back to him we (him his fellow salesman and the other customer) get to talking about the fedeal & state propossed mag ban and he said oh they will get it no big deal, just get a ten round mag for your AR. Now I never told him I hadd a AR. Then I told him I have a 9mm that holds 17rounds and a 45 that holds 12rounds. Then he tells me no big deal just buy some 10 round mags for them. I then inform him that the Mfg no longer makes the model of pistols that I have and I have 6 mags for each gun. Because I use them for USPSA matchs. Plus why would they make any 10 round mags for a gun that is no longer in production? I asked him why he is not fighting the anti's he had no comment. Well I came to the conclusion that these dumb a$%^'s are allready rolling over to the anti's and do not even get. Just buy more legal stuff, that's it. :x

His manager and I would have had a most illuminating conversation after that. Rule 1: don't alienate your big ticket customers.

I was at Gander in Lakeville on Saturday looking to pickup some cleaning supplies. One of the folks from firearms area asked me if I needed any help, and I said I was looking for a gun cleaning cloth. Nothing fancy, just a lint free cloth. He said that there are lots of rags there, and it is just a matter of my preference as far as what they are treated with. I clarified that I was looking for just a plain cloth to remove solvent when cleaning, etc. He said that the silicon ones work the best. At that point I gave up.

A guy next to me was looking at solvents, and the Gander dude asked if he needed help with anything. The guy said he was looking for hoppes number 9 (they did not have any of the 5oz bottles on the shelf). The gander guy said "we have this" and points to the pint size bottle then said "but I bet you dont need that much". He then tells the guy he can use the hoppes copper solvent thats on the shelf and walks away. As I leave, I say to the guy that was looking for solvent "They have plenty of bottles of hoppes at Fleet Farm across the freeway, I just picked one up".

In the end I got a 4 pack of microfiber cloths from Wal-mart for $5.00. Yes, I am now putting Gander below Wal-mart on my list; and that says alot.

I can't wait till Cabelas moves in, within sight of Gander in Woodbury... I'll never go there again.

i look forward to Cabela's in Woodbury. I rarely if ever go to Gouger Mt and then only if I am just looking around or KNOW they have something I want. I pay no attention to the salespeople. I'm not an expert but I don't have to be to know more than they do.

Maybe it's just an isolated incident. Personally I think the service at Gander Mountain is a lot better than any service I have ever received at Cabelas. My Minnesota place is 2 miles from the proposed Cabelas site but they won't be seeing me.

Cabela's will be sunshine and fresh air, as far as I'm concerned. I never spent much time at the various GM stores, so I can't say whether Woodbury is an anomaly, or typical of the chain's operation.
In fairness, I've heard excellent reviews of the resident gunsmith there.
But this repost is why I plan to not set foot in there again:
...happened mid Jan...
... I may have just had my last visit at a gander mnt. I stopped by the Woodbury store, just 'cause I was in the area.
After 5 min of squinting at the glossy, and reflective tags on the long guns 8' away, I wandered over to the handgun cases. There were numerous people engaged with the sales staff looking at various pieces.
The party next to me- a 20-something man and woman- asked to look at something in the display case. The salesman picked up the gun, and without checking/ clearing, handed it to her( I suspect she'd never held a gun before) , and the woman, with her finger inside the trigger guard, proceeded to sweep her companion, the clerk, and the other dozen people at the counter. She casually pointed it at her companion's stomach while the clerk reached over and popped the mag release for her. The dork behind the counter neither said nor did anything to suggest concern for her handling of the gun. If fact his total lack of reaction or response told me he didn't see an issue with such unsafe behavior.

Gander Mountain in Woodbury is the only one in the area with a gunsmith on the premises.

Just curious: Do they take work from other stores in the area, or is gunsmithing simply not available at the other stores?

The other stores send their work to the Woodbury store.

Is the gun smith still there? If so he must be hidden. I seen no mention of a gunsmith when I was there today. Plus I have never seen him in over a year.

As someone who thinks he does not know everything about the gun world, the EP location was helpful when I bought mine

I live in EP and spook around the GM there. There is a lady who has decent knowledge, and there was one other young guy, the others are so so.

Fred the gunsmith is hidden back behind the gun counter area. He was getting too many interruptions which is why they eliminated the gunsmith window
