Guns Everyone Should Own?

Here's my picks for guns I think I should own, and I also think it'd be a good baseline for everyone to have for a well-rounded collection. I'm keeping this pretty generalized versus saying "XYZ particular gun in ABC caliber" since there's a wide variety of great choices.

.22LR pistol.
I have my Ruger Mark II 2245, but there's plenty of good ones out there to choose from.

Ruger 10/22 rifle.
I want one of these for a variety of reasons, but mainly so I can shoot that squirrel at 400 yards (GRIN)

A defensive semi-automatic of your choice in 9mm, .40, .45ACP.
I have my XDm in .45ACP. there's a lot of good guns to choose from.

A defensive revolver such as a .357 magnum.
A bolt action rifle.
A shotgun. Remington 870 comes to mind as a good old standard shotgun to have and own. I also like the Benali M4.
An AR-15

1,000 rounds minimum for each gun in reserve ammo, plus whatever ammo you shoot. I'm personally trying to get up to 10,000 in reserve in .45ACP and 25,000 in reserve for .22LR, but not sure if I'll make those goals because if I do, I'll still need more ammo to use so I don't go below those minimum numbers. I am getting closer though on each one.

Even though I own a 10/22, I would say any .22LR rifle. A person needs a 22 rifle. Otherwise, nice list.

No major arguments with the list but like Spinner I would keep it more general. There's alternative 22 rifles and SA .223's that work well. I would probably trade the defensive revo for a large caliber revo but that's just my opinion.

Two tiers of "need"

Tier 1: Basic Needs I recommend every American have.

1. Handgun of a suitable defensive caliber - whatever they prefer (revolver vs semi, caliber, etc)

2. A shotgun. Ideally, have both a shorter barrel for defensive use and a longer barrel with chokes for clays/hunting/whatever. Ithaca 37/Mossberg 500/Remington 870/Benelli Nova/etc.

3. A .22 caliber rifle, for plinking and for small game (not to mention easy to stockpile ammunition)

The reason ARs/AKs did not make the cut in Tier 1 is primarily in cost. Even before the panic, they weren't really for the budget minded shooter. All of the tier 1 options are relatively inexpensive, with the handgun being the most expensive (but also the most likely to be used by a person in a defensive situation)


Tier 2: Advanced needs

1. Either an AR or AK pattern rifle, your choice. (both is better yet)
2. M1 Garand
3. .22 LR handgun
4. Bolt action rifle of larger caliber (.308, 7.62x54R, 8mm Mauser, .270 Winchester, etc. etc. etc.)

Tier 3:

Whatever you want to buy and can afford

Is the remington 870 the most common shotgun? I swear everyone i know has one, or has atleast had one. I remember my first shotgun my dad bought me. A 20ga winchester, back in 1987. Then in 1989, i gave that one to my nephew, and my dad bought me an 870 combo kit for my 13 bday. Bird barrel has hardly been on there, and you could say that slug barrel has basically been melded to it. I retired it from deer hunting. I think it's shot it's quota. And i have another 870 with a bird barrel on it, that has never been shot.

If i remember correctly, when dad bought me that gun for my bday, i think he paid 219 or 239 for the combo kit back then! That was one of the best all around cheap shotguns you could buy, and when you could get the combo kit for a hair over 2 bills that was cheap. Gosh, those were the days!

I agree with the picks for the most part. I can't say I want 1000 shot shells around. I would think having quite a bit of ammo for your main practice weapon and also 22 because it's 22 make the most sense.

I suppose someday I will get a wheel, but that's after a 1911 in my mind (not in need level...in want level).

Agreed. But I would expand that to any mid to full size 9mm for practice and fun. Today the cost difference isn't as evident...

I don't know if it is the most common, but it is certainly one of the most common.

Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 are the first two I think of. Winchester 1300 and Ithaca 37 are up there but not quite as many.


And yes, I have one too. Actually, I have both the 870 and the Mossberg 500, and a Benelli Nova. Go figure.

Well, ok, I can see not having 1,000 shotgun rounds, but if you can, why not? Needed? no, probably not. I definately agree with having the most ammo for your main carry weapon, .22LR, and main rifle though.

According to most literature I can find in a quick Google search, the 870 is one of the best selling shotguns ever - in excess of 10 million produced.

Tom Gresham had sorta asked the same question on another site. If you could only take 5 guns with, what would you take? As much as I hope to never have to pick 5, here's my 2 cents:

An AR-15. If I could only take one it would be my Tac-Optics 3-gun rig since it's the most versatile in the fleet. 18" medium weight barrel with a 1-4 Burris MTAC scope. Shoots sub-moa with my 55 or 77 grain loads

A 12 ga. shotgun. Again I would take my 3-gun shotgun. Benelli M2 with a 26" barrel and and 10 round mag, 11 rounds fully loaded. It shoots bird, buck and slugs indiscriminately. Would work well both as a defensive and a hunting gun.

A defensive pistol. Torn between my XDm 3.8 compact in .40 or XDm 5.25 in .40. Probably go with the 5.25, cause if I could only take 5 guns with me I don't think concealability would be much of a factor anymore.

Gotta have one bigger gun. I'd take my custom Rem 700, 7mm Mag set up to be the ultimate long range hunting rifle. Shooting 180gr Berger VLD's, it's good medicine for pretty much any critter in NA, even if a tad light for the big bruins.

Can't live without a .22. I'd take one of my 10/22's. Probably the one with the Volquartsen snake fluted barrel, just cause it looks sexy......and it's a fricken tack driver.
