As far as the video goes.....Not too bad of list, if you were starting from scratch. Though I would question the validity of anyone that recommended a pistol grip only (as in no shoulder stock at all) shotgun for home defense, especially for a novice. They look good in the movies, but IMHO aren't really very effective...... and yes do I own one, so I'm not just making this up or recycling internet fodder. Any gun that would make my list is something my wife could pick up and shoot easily. I don't think a pistol grip shotgun meets that line of criteria. If they had said a pistol grip shotgun with a folding stock it would have been a little more plausible. Again, that's just my opinion.

I someday want to try two identical shotguns, with the same ammo. One with a pistol grip, one with a regular stock.

I could help you out with that. Except you would have to drive 10 miles past the end of the horizon to get where I live.

How many wrenches are in your toolbox? What do you need a 9/16ths for? Doesn't a 7/8ths work for everything?

My opinion, I own a few shoty's, OU's, auto Gold packages… all nice and pretty brown BUT shooting clays with M2/M4 pistol grip just rocks, always amazes me how fast a person can get six off with so little felt recoil.

I'm currently working on getting an over-under shotgun and an AR-15. Just gotta sell my Saiga-12 to get the money first.

I have tried, every time I get to the horizon it seems to move.

Selling the Saiga shouldn't be too hard in this panic frenzy market.

Getting the AR afterwards is a different story.

Best of luck.

Because there are literally dozens of AR makers and because of all the conflicting talk on this forum about what constitutes a "good" AR model...I never did get one. Guess I'll have to wait til the panic subsides. I'm good on the other 4 must haves though. ;)

Depends on how important things are to you. A lot of people will try to cite "the chart" and compare AR makers to how close they are to milspec.

My honest opinion? Find a company without QC issues that you like and be happy. The chances of you testing your AR past the point of milspec are pretty minimal.

Now, if you're a 3-gun competitor putting thousands and thousands of rounds out of it, then yeah maybe you'll want to invest a little better.

Here is my list, tailored for my prepper mindset: (1) Ruger 10/22, synthetic stock, stainless finish, sling, 4x scope, 2 ten round mags and one 25 round mag - Good for small game, a well placed hollow point shot would bring down a deer and would be somewhat effective as a defensive weapon. (2) Ruger Mini 14, wood stock, blued finish, sling and 4x scope, 1 five round, 3 ten round and one 20 round mags. A good defensive weapon, an adequate deer rifle, especially with hollow point 5.56 ammo (which I have plenty of). (3) Beretta PX4 Storm, full sized, .40 cal, three 14 round mags and two 10 round mags (high capacity mags aren't easy to find for this sucker!) as main sidearm. (4) Beretta PX4 Storm, sub-compact, .40 cal with two 10 round mags designed to fit the sub-compact, plus all mags made for the full sized PX4 also work in the sub-compact, plus I have three adapters which basically work as spacers on the longer mags for the full sized PX4. The sub-compact PX4 is basically a back-up side arm. As a practical matter, the Mini 14 and the full sized PX4 are for Papa Bear and the 10/22 and the sub-compact PX4 are for Mama Bear. We don't have a Baby Bear. I've stocked up on ammo. I've got 5000 rounds of hollow point .22LR, 2000 rounds of 5.56, about half of which is hollow point, the rest is a mix of ball or green tip, and 1000 rounds of the .40 cal S&W. At some point I suppose I should probably add a 12 gauge and a true bolt action deer rifle to the mix, but I'm pretty happy with what I have now.

"basic everyone should own"

One gun, doesn't matter what kind. If you need to defend house and home, anything will work.

For a basic outdoorsman-

A rimfire rifle. Use for small game/varmints/practice. While a .22 LR is the most common, if you are not a doomsday/zombie guy the .17's or the magnum versions will serve the role.

Defensive caliber pistol. Don't care if its a revolver, a DAO revolver, or even a block... Something man portable without using your hand to carry it around. If you think a .32 ACP is a defensive round, its OK, if you are dirty harry or hang out around big bears, a .44 mag is fine also. As long as you can holster it and carry it with some degree of comfort, its good.

Shotgun- again, doesn't matter what action, but make sure its capable of dealing adequately with the birds in your area- so if you don't live in a desert, something that can handle #2 shot for geese. Essentially means that smaller than 20 gauge is not a good choice. If you have a accurate shooter for a shotgun, then the last isn't needed, as smoothbore slugs will take most any big game here in north america, although lots of them you will need lots of luck to get close enough.

Mid bore centerfire rifle. Something capable of putting down an elk at 200 yards with a shoulder shot. You may not need this in MN, but if you hunt much out of MN it is a good thing, and can serve as a back up for defensive uses. Essentially, a 7 mm Mauser on up.

Muzzleloader- this is on just because there are way too many "primitive weapon" seasons for an outdoorsman to want to give up that much field time.

Gun enthusiast's basic list:

Air Rifle- Indoor practice (and it takes care of squirrels when some rodent won't let you shoot em....)

Rimfire Rifle- Small game and plinking/practice

Rimfire handgun- plinking, practice, and useful as a kit gun

Defensive handgun- self explanatory

Large bore hunting handgun- in case you are around bigger animals, or if you want to hunt with it.

Defensive rifle- this is where an AR or a AK fit. It can be used for other roles also to some effect, most notably 3 gun competitions.

Varmint (smallbore centerfire) rifle. In case Wiley coyote bugs your chickens.

Mid Bore rifle- deer, elk, bear, sheep.

Large bore hunting rifle- Buffalo, Lion, Elephant-er engine blocks...

long range specialized rifle- if you want to hit at 600 or more, you gotta have the tools

Upland bird shotgun- nice light 20 ga double gun....

Waterfowl shotgun- heavy gun to take the recoil a bit. Will also work well on turkeys

Social shotgun- home defense and 3 gun.

Muzzleloader- primitive season hunting, and they are kind of fun. Also, for the prepper types, you can make everything you need to shoot by yourself.

Gun Enthusiast's advanced list:

All of the above plus whatever you can afford, and then a few.

If I had to narrow it down to 3, I would keep my .375H&H, 12 Ga Benelli, and one of the .45's.

More reasons to like a lever. Like a shotgun, a lever rifle can be be topped off on the fly. You can match caliber with a handgun - .38, .357, .44, .45. And with an action job by one of the cowboy shooter smiths, easy to cock and dependable. Yes, you do have to know what types of noses to avoid. Pack a 1911 along with it and you carry over 200 years of exquisite American history.

3 gun limit? My 18" custom .556, 1892 .357, and Colt 1911.(I know, don't match. .45 1894 trapper in my future.)

I can simplify this even more.

1. A rifle chambered in .22
2. Anything chambered in 9mm or .45
3. A shotgun chambered in 12GA
4. An AR-15

That should do it.
