In looking around a little more, I see this was dropped on us about a week ago. Sorry, My head has been out of the game for a few days.

Is there a current thread anywhere on the topic?

Ok, it states this....

Sec. 7. PERSONS POSSESSING ASSAULT WEAPONS ON EFFECTIVE DATE

Any person who, on February 1, 2013, legally owns or is in possession of an assault weapon has until September 1, 2013, to do any of the following without being subject to
prosecution under Minnesota Statutes, section 624.7133:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So does that mean that, if on Feb 1, 2013, you dind't own an assault weapon, but after Feb 2nd you bought one, would that be a way around the rule? It doesn't say anything at all about after that date.

EDIT:... I think personally if that's how it's stated, i would fight that. for anyone that didn't own an assault rifle before feb 1... I think you could possibly have a way around it or atleast a fighting chance the way it's worded.

Good question.

I'll bet he first to admit that I don't always get what they are trying to say

That makes 2 of us. But according to the way it's worded, Feb 1, 2013.. That in theory would mean if you bought it after Feb 1, 2013, then you shouldn't need to register it or whatever they say. Unless they change the wording, i would make darn sure i buy alot of them after and fight that one. They would atleast have to wait until the next legislation to amend it. And by then it could possibly be thrown back out.

This is so recently purchased "assault weapons" will not be grandfathered. They will need to be transported out of state, permanently disabled, or turned in for destruction. This was done to punish those who purchased an "assault weapon" in response to the bill being introduced.

If this bill passes, and you bought an AR-15 after Feb 1st, you can't keep it. If you do, it's a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

But i wonder how they are actually going to regulate that?

Everyone does know that the government doesn't have any serial numbers, or know what you bought right? The only places that know are the gun shops. So are they going to go thru every gun shop and look up the records?

When you do a NICS, all that does is register you. And registers whether you bought a hand gun or long gun. That's it. The paperwork with serial number stays in the gun shop. But i don't know for how many years they have to keep those records though.

Believe FFL need to keep the 4473 for 20 years. I would guess the first thing they would do would subpoena every 4473 in the state.

I'm guessing that we would then be paying someone to look those all over? Alot of my tax dollars at work again, and for such a good cause!

As I understand it, that bill pertains to all semiautomatic rifles in one way or another.

It's not too late to write/call members of teh House and Senate committees, or your own senator and represnetative.

While you're at it, add the US congress members, as well, since they're discussing similar harmful legislation.

It does not, for example, apply to the Ruger 10-22 or that type of rifle.....at least as I understand it.

Unfortunately, it does:
HF0241 wrote:"Assault weapon" means any:
(1) semi-automatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and has one or more of the following:
...
(iv) a shroud attached to the barrel, or that partially or completely encircles the barrel, allowing the bearer to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned, but excluding a slide that encloses the barrel;

https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bin/bldbill. ... ssion=ls88

By this definition any rifle that has a stock that extends forward of the action would be considered an "Assault Weapon". Note that they removed "Military Style" from the term "Assault Weapon", which is an indication that what they intent to do is to effectively ban all semi-auto weapons, not just those that appear to be "Military Style".

You need to actually read the bills being proposed. They do much much more than their simple title would imply.
