Disgusted with ammo prices and availability

Postby ShaneInMN on Sun Feb 17, 2013 1:52 am

I live out in the middle of gods country, nowhere near any B&M retailers who supply ammo. When I do go, I try and pair it up with grocery shopping (walmart), and then hit up some gun shops on the way home. It costs me roughly $7+ in gas to get to town and back. I can't afford to drive all over hunting ammo. I do find some ammo online but the shipping is ridiculous. I just picked up some 5.56 ammo for $0.86/ea after shipping. This is about 4 times what it used to cost before all this insanity.

I can't find anything on the shelves for 22LR, or .223/5.56. I can sometimes find .45 ACP, but it's overpriced, and 9mm can be found in small amounts.

I am just disgusted right now. I don't even want to go to the range and have a good time shooting because the cost AND availability of ammo is so disheartening right now. I seriously hope things change soon.

Get into reloading. That hazmat fee will save you gas money and time.

I've shot through 400+ rounds of .223 and 300blk in the last 3 weeks and none of it cost over .50.

Reloading supplies and components are about as rare and hard to find as ammunition.
These are tough times.

I guess you're looking in the wrong places.

Palmetto routinely has SMK's, Gun Stop, Ammocraft, and Wolfs Den all have powder and if they lack primers will put you on the list (at least ammocraft had a primers backorder list).

Midway is taking backorders on some supplies as well.

I'm not claiming you can march right out and buy everything, but within a few weeks you could have all you need to be good for a while. Then you just keep ordering as you use up what you have, just like everyone in manufacturing does with their components. If you need it next week, and didn't order it last month - it's your own fault if you don't have it on time.

Or you can spend the month trying to buy ammo at 2 boxes a trip when you find it. All that gas (@$3.75/gal) could pay for a lee set pretty quick.

A while ago a guy I shoot with was ribbing me for shooting a revolver while everyone else was shooting their Glocks. He's out of 9mm and I'm going strong.

Ouch, with shipping, hazmat, and tax it is over $37 per 1k. Still a lot cheaper than buying ammo though, I saw surplus Ammo has 1K lots of 9mm FMJ for $569, I year ago was paying $189 for the same ammo from them.

I am so thankful I took the plunge into reloading last summer :D

Still need a press but I also thank you. It may be "expensive" compared to the days of yore but when 9mm range ammo is hard to find at less than forty cents a round it looks pretty good.

Thanks for the heads up. Dont really like paying the shipping on this type of stuff, but with the availablity locally, it was worth it. I called in and placed an order to get me through for awhile. Cabelas said Ill see them the 26th

I know nothing about reloading, can someone point me in the direction of a good site that I can look at? How about range use, is it acceptable?

Buy 5 boxes and you're down to reasonable prices even with hazmat fee. They don't go bad, and they don't take up much space.

With $4 gas, it costs me $10 to drive to cabelas. "To my door" means it's also not a wasted trip. ;)

Hot dang! Glad I checked the forum today. Just ordered 5k of the small pistol. Use CLUBFIVE for a promo code and you get $5 shipping. Not bad. I'll pay $25 to have them shipped to me and save a trip in my truck. I'd easily pay that in gas going there and back.
