Be aware that the committee chair has said they will NOT accept any testimony on "Assault Weapon or Magazine Bans" since none are under consideration in the Senate currently. If you're going to speak during the public testimony portion - be sure its in relation to a bill actually being considered.

I really liked GOCRA's front page summary of the current bills and what they mean to us. VERY helpful!

Also note that these hearings will be in room 15 in the main Capitol bldg, not in the State office building that the house hearings were in. I believe that it's directly below the rotunda.

Please please please please - if you're going to carry at the Capitol, make sure you've sent in your notification.

The warning about carrying and notification has been on the bottom of EVERY note from the Senate. I believe they plan on actively enforcing the law and checking anyone seen carrying for permit and notification.

The last thing we need if for someone to get carted out in handcuffs in front of the press.

I assume the digital attachment some of us received in email is sufficient, so I can only assume showing the attachment on your Smartphone with the stamp is acceptable proof.

That's my plan. I have a very legible email and attachment on my phone. One could print it out, but that is not my plan.

And for those who've yet to send in notification: It took me less than 30 minutes to compose and send the email, and receive a verification response.

No reason not to have it.

I have my confirmation email from Sgt Mike Parker that I'll be bringing with me. If they're going to start checking, I want to make it as easy for the security officer or State Trooper as possible.

I imagine our friends are going to try and make this an issue

I fully expect to receive a friendly tap on my shoulder from the extremely nice and professional members of Capitol Security or the numerous State Troopers.

They're on our side, and being forced to do their jobs. The law says what it says, send in the notification!

FACT CHECK, please!

The bearded sage who is a retired professor from Hamline (Vogal) said during today's hearing that firearms deaths in the United States have exceeded the deaths from all our wars.

WTF???????

That's a LOT of deaths! What is he smokin'?

Btw, I liked the initial statements about mental health - very appropriate, considering how these proposed bills have overreaching consequences.

That is actually true. And the gun death numbers are from the 60s. I'm not sure if I've heard that they include suicides.

edit: They include suicides and accidental deaths in that number. There have been about 650,000 deaths from wars.

Statistics on total U.S. gun deaths (including suicides and unintentional shootings), as compiled by the National Center for Health Statistics, have only been collected since 1979. But between 1979 and 1997, 651,697 Americans lost their lives to gun violence, including 334,870 suicides, 278,865 homicides, 28,964 unintentional shootings, and 8,998 from unknown causes.

I think it's a bit disingenuous to include suicides and unintentional shootings, but then again, since these numbers are from 1979, I think it's probably reasonable to assume the general premise (homicides only) is true.

Chief Bling has made similar statements.
I believe they are citing killed by enemy, which until WWII was second to disease as the source of casualties.

That can be turned around on them. Chicago, DC, Detroit, with their gun laws, lose more residents to domestic murder than war.

Okay, thank you for setting me straight. My gut instinct was telling me that there's no way that could be true.

Interesting hearing today, and somewhat different than the House hearing. I'm glad I was able to watch it online.

Many of those killed in the Civil War were killed by gunshot. He would have to count those twice. Once on each side.
