You.....YOU.....YOU!!!.......Oh well, it's all in good fun right. I botched that one too last time. Not near as bad as gunnerBMG , but it certainly wasn't very smooth. This will be the first match with my new JP trigger....Oh yea.

Chris

Like I said, this is depending a lot on the weather. I don't want anyone getting a long gun stock caught up in heavy clothing and having anything unsafe happen in the heat of competition. There is a good likely hood the stage will stay the same, just everything shot with strong hand. There will be reloads though.

The skill of switching weapons to be fired from the off hand is one that is not tested often at 3-gun matches, but when it is tested it really seperates the prepared shooters. A little dry fire practice goes a long way to being comfortable with this skill.

I also forgot to add that everyone should have 10 slugs with just in case.

I think this match might have one stage with a few slugs so be prepared.

For the new people coming to the match. Relax and have fun.

Just as a reminder: This is a cold range and we are not talking about the temperature here. No loaded weapons until you are told to load and make ready on the firing line. There are "safety areas" where you can take your bagged handgun and holster up. When you holster your empty weapon it must have the slide forward and hammer down on an empty chamber. The safety area is where you can handle your unloaded weapons prior to the match or during the match if something needs to be looked at. No ammo can be handled in the safety area. Unloaded long guns should be carried in a case with the slide locked back.

When you get to the match you will be placed in "squads" and each squad will have several experienced shooters to mentor the new people through the match. We want you to have a safe, fun time with hopes of seeing you return. You will we see some of the best shooters in the country at this match, and it will be fun to watch them go to work with their guns. Do not try to do what they do, at least not yet. Know your limitations and stay within them. Take your time and get your hits on the targets.

If possible, take the time to do some dry fire with your weapons and equipment in the comfort of your warm home. Practice draws from your holster, practice shotgun reloads (dummy rounds are advised), practice reloading your rifle, figure out where you will hold extra shotgun shells and magazines, etc.. The more comfortable you are doing these things prior to the match, the more you can focus on shooting the stages. The number one thing to practice during dry fire and when you get to the range. KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON TARGET. All of the safey rules apply but this seems to be the biggest one we see when shooters start getting stressed.

Since this is a volunteer sport (no one makes any money, it all goes to the club putting on the match), all shooters are requested to do their fair share. When the Range Officer calls "Range Clear" we expect everyone that is not shooting next, shooter on deck, or the shooter that has just finished stage, to head down range and help paste targets and reset steel. This will make the match go much quicker and it makes less work if everyone lends a hand.

Speaking of lending a hand. We will be starting setup of stages at around 0730 hrs. More helping hands makes quick work of this and anyone helping gets to ask questions and advice from the knowledgeable shooters that are setting the stages. It is a win - win for all involved.

Dress warm and leave your ego in your truck once you arrive. To come here and expect to kick everyones butt could be a sobering experience. At least until you get some experience under your belt.

For the 3-Gun match at SCAPSA on March 16th, please bring:
    100 rounds of rifle ammo
    100 rounds of handgun ammo
100 rounds of shotgun birdshot ammo
    10 rounds of shotgun slugs
This is not the minimum round count. This is the amount that we've always recommended for people to bring our matches. Obviously, you won't need this much ammo unless you feel the need to shoot more ammo than required. But its always better to have extra rounds than run short. Remember, no steel core or steel shot ammo. If the bullet (not the casing) sticks to a magnet, you can't use it as it damages our steel targets. I will have a magnet available at the match, but please check your before you even come.

We will be shooting slugs at this match so bring atleast 10.

The match fee is $25. Set-up will begin at 7:30 AM with the shooter's meeting planned for 9:30 AM providing the stages are completely set up. Registrations will begin at 9:00 AM.

For those new to 3-Gun, Brian Payne nailed it dead-on with his post above. I will likely be at the registration table so please introduce yourself and let me know that you're a new shooter and we can get you started right. We will have a little new shooter orientation for you guys before the shooter's meeting.

OOOh this one's going to be interesting. Like the last one with that loooong handgun shot (was it 100 yards or less?).

I was 75 yards.

Hey shooters, Take a few minutes and go to the MN 3 Gun Group website and review the rules we use. There is the general rules the match operates under as well as the Cold Range rules, Payne mentioned. See you all in a few weeks.

Thanks for the tips and recommendations. This is the kinda information that is really helpful.

My main goals for the match are: 1) don't shoot anyone, 2) don't shoot myself, 3) don't get DQ'd and 4) hit at least some targets. :-P

Realistically, how much ammo is really needed? Not only is it hard to find at the moment it isn't cheap either!

If you can find the listed 100 rounds per weapon, get it, you will have extra for the next match.

The stage I am putting together has 24 rounds of rifle and 20 rounds of handgun if you don't miss. You can cut the amount by half if you hit the paper target with one shot in the "A" zone of the target rather than putting "2 on brown" to neutralize the target.

For shotgun ammo., the Federal bulk pack (100 rounds) from Walmart work well. I have not tried the Winchester or Remington loads.
