My most recent dispatch to St. Paul

Postby tman on Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:18 pm

This - or a version of it - went to my area senators and reps.

tman wrote:I am a local law enforcement officer who attended and testified at the recent House Public Safety Committee hearings wherein several new pieces of gun control legislation were introduced. I was proud to be among the members of the public who swamped the building in support of the human right of self defense. A portion of my patrol area lies in your district.

I, better than most, understand gun violence and the people that perpetrate it. I can also tell you that these new proposed laws will do absolutely nothing to deter or diminish this violence. The criminals who use guns to further their will never submit themselves to a background check. They won’t care how many rounds per magazine is a lawful number. They won’t bother to worry if their rifle has a folding stock, a removable magazine, or a flash hider. In fact, none of these proposed laws will do anything to deter criminals or lessen crime.

As a deputy sheriff, I carry a pistol with three magazines. Each has a capacity of seventeen rounds. That’s over FIFTY rounds that I carry with me everywhere I go. I can guarantee you that if, God forbid, I am ever in a situation where I need to use my pistol, I won’t ever think that I brought TOO MUCH ammunition! It’s ludicrous to think that the people who called the police and then have to wait for us to arrive, should have to defend themselves with less!

These ill-conceived and hastily presented bills will only make criminals of law abiding Minnesotans. They will make many of the commonly used rifles, pistols, and shotguns unlawful to possess – for any purpose.

I urge you to oppose this new round of gun control in its entirety, and please suggest that your colleagues in the house and senate do the same.

Thank you,

tman

My ONE response:

Senator Rod Skoe (DFL) wrote:tman

Thank you for contacting me regarding proposed firearm legislation. I am a hunter and gun owner. I believe we should be strengthening mental health care and improving the quality of data supporting the National Instant Criminal Background Check system.

The Senate is not going to ban guns or clip size.

I believe the number one issue facing the legislature is fixing Minnesota's budget problems in a fair and responsible way. We need to bring structural balance to Minnesota's budget. This is what I am focusing on and encouraging my colleagues to focus on this session.

tman, thank you for writing in and letting them know the truth from a real law enforcement agent!

I'm starting to think that half of the people that are all for these bans are "bought and paid for"...

The truth of the matter is, exactly as you stated it! Criminals don't care! And they will get the weapons they want. Won't matter if it's legal or illegal. They will get what they want somehow.

It has been disappointing to see so many police chiefs take the side of the gun grabbers at the MN House and Senate. I assume there is a silent majority who oppose them, but for whatever reason they are not making their voices heard.

Thank you for standing with us.

Now keep on the pressure -- it was anticipated that the AR-ban and mag cap laws were bargaining chips to "settle" for Universal Background Checks (SF-458), which is backdoor REGISTRATION.

I think that's one of the better testimonials I've read (or heard) since all this nonsense started.
