US SENATORS NEAR DEAL ON PRIVATE BACKGROUND CHECKS

Postby LarryP on Sat Feb 23, 2013 8:09 pm

I think we're screwed, Even with all people have done here to fight private background checks at a state level. Doesn't look good.

It can't be good if Collins and McCain are in on it. I like how the article refers to Chuckie Schumer as the chief negotiator. Chuckie knows nothing about negotiation. "My way or the highway" is his style.

Senate? That's the easy part for them.

Yes, but Sen Coburn has a solid A rating from the NRA.

So four Senators are close to an agreement, but they don't agree on how to implement any of the requirements of the agreement. There is an exemption the size of an aircraft carrier in the background check process. Too top it off they don't know wether the records will be kept or not...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it was a slow news day at the Washington Post.

The article says that the house would not touch the issue until after the senate has acted. I'm guessing if this drags out until the campain season starts, there won't be much action on it in the house.

Even if it happened it would be DOA in the house.

Don't assume that -- open the floodgates on our congress reps. Make them feel the heat from back home!

What happened to the semi-automatic rifle and standard cap magazine bans?

Bills are like zombies, they WILL return unless you give them a headshot. For good measure, make it a double tap. In other words, make SURE it's dead before you turn your back. Don't end up like T-Dog. ;)

I don't mean to rain on the celebration, but it's a bit early yet I believe to sign praises that the wicked witch (aka bill(s) is/are dead. if it/they is dead, now we need to begin working towards a pro-gun bill and legislation into state law.

One out of four isn't enough. And Coburn has caved on some other issues. No one knows what hole McCain will pop out of. He has and always will be a "go along to get along" senator who has done very little for his party. He along with Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, John Boehner and former senator Olympia Snowe are the reasons I will never send $$ to the RNC.

Politicians often have no problem passing things without specifics, and then leave it up to the implementation folks to decide what the actual end enforcement result will be. They get to say they compromised and passed something. Whomever is the head of the agency (ATF, DHS, DOJ) gets to do pretty much whatever they want with the roughed out mandate. It sucks, but it happens more often than not.
