870 Barrel

Postby Countryfried Frank on Thu Feb 28, 2013 7:53 am

A friend of mine cut down his 28" 870 12ga smoothbore to 26 and is now crabbing that its pattern sucks. I told him it's time for a new barrel but he doesn't want to put much money into it and he can't find a 26". Can his bubba'd barrel be reamed and tapped to take a choke and about how much would that cost? Thanks in advance for your advice.

I dunno, I suppose it could... maybe call Ahlman's and get a better idea, but most smaller gun stores and pawn shops have buckets of barrels, Remington 870 ones shouldn't be hard to find. If he wants new, Cabela's and Gander seem to have them all the time.

Here's one on Armslist for $125, but it's the 28" model:

It would cost way more than a used barrel. Tell him to hit a few pawn shops and gun shops. $100-150 would get you a nice barrel.

$125-150 is pretty well standard shop charge on installing a choke tube system. That said, it shouldn't be tough to do as long as the barrel has not been back bored.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. He is pretty set on a 26" and he thinks he is stuck paying GM prices a new one. I'll let him know to call Ahlmans.

He can buy a 26" rem choke barrel right from Remington for under $200, should be half that for a used one.

My buddy has a browning Citori with fixed chokes he wanted to have tapped for screw in chokes. He got a quote from Capra's in Blaine for $120/barrel. It might not be as expensive as you think.
