I've often wondered about that. My 6550 was manufactured in 1987 or 88. The barrel is original as far as I know. It was originally owned by the Utah State Highway Patrol. I have no idea how many rounds they put through it, but I have fired thousands. I haven't noticed anything that would indicate the barrel is worn-out. I've heard 25,000 rounds is the magic number, maybe I just haven't hit that yet.

You will be well past the reasonable accuracy life of any barrel before 25k. The problem is throat erosion and your chamber gets a tiny bit longer everytime you fire a round. After thousands of rounds, it can get a lot longer. This is a quantifiable number that can be measured with a cheap and simple to use tool. If you shoot a lot, it's a good idea to measure your chamber when it's brand new and then compare every so often to see how much it is eroding. Some bullets can be pretty sensitive to the distance they jump(or jam) to the lands and the rounds you loaded to jump .010" when the barrel was new might be jumping .050" after you put a bunch of rounds down range.

My first service rifle barrel(PacNor 7.5 twist) went 6700 rounds before I replaced it with a Krieger. At that time, I don't think I was a good enough shooter at 600 to be able to tell if the barrel was the problem, or if I was, so I probably left the PacNor on too long. Now I am a good enough shooter and I can tell when a barrel is losing accuracy. The Krieger has about 3k rounds on it and still shoots great at 600, but I stopped shooting that particular rifle in 2010. As Rip stated, out past 300 is where things start to fall apart on high round-count barrels. I bet the PacNor barrel would still clean a 200 yard target if I put it back on a rifle.

Not the first one. 2nd may work, but it looks pretty crude. Will post a link in a bit when I get back to the computer

On a plinking AR, I would probably keep a barrel until it couldn't hold 4 MOA with quality ammo or cheap 55 Gr. bullets (I.E. WWB) start to keyhole. Then again, I'm cheap. :)

Here's what I use to measure throat wear:

http://www.brownells.com/reloading/meas ... 35663.aspx

You need to buy a modified case for each cartridge chamber you want to measure. There are other tools that can measure this, but I like this one because it lets you use the actual bullets that you will load with to measure, as opposed to some other ones. There is a little bit of a learning curve to getting the measurement right, but once you find what the lands "feel" like, it's easy to use.

I'm going to take a WAG and suggest that most of the guns that have been sold in the last year have never been fired by their new owner.

I have owned two 16 inch ARs and one 20 inch. I prefer the 20 inch by far, it is simply more comfortable. The reason I have not purchased an AR in the last 3 or 4 months is that I can't find a 20"
I put myself on the list at my local L&M, but the guy basically said good luck haha.
Given that I probably won't end up with a 20 inch, I should just get a 16 inch for now but slap the A2 stock on it. Try it some time, it is extremely comfortable.

The extra barrel length doesn't change much.

I would've preferred a 20" for the poodle shooter build, but settled on 18" because I found one.

Good plan. It's bad to discriminate!

I guess I'm thinking that when the "stock" drops and the guys that bought them for the "investment" get sick of holding them/could use the money, they'll start to dump them.

I'm in no hurry, so we'll see how it goes.

When I get serious, I'll start scouring a bit more, but for now, I have the use of a Savage bolt in .223 that I think I'll try to put to use this spring and summer at the farm. Never predator hunted before, so it may not be for me afterall.

Even a chrome lined barrel can only be expected to last about 10k rounds.

20" system is more pronbe to failures caused by under powered ammo. Carbine length systems are more forgiving as they are over gassed.

I don't have that problem with XM193.

That's "hot" military ammo, if you fired Wolf in a 20" it would be a different story.
