.300 BLK Anywhere?

I'm a little surprised somebody would get into 300 Blackout withOUT reloading. A wildcat round like that which is just begging to be fiddled with for different bullet options and those subsonic rounds, and people just want to buy factory stuff?? Was somebody under the impression that there was no difference between stuff like stock .223 and .308 ammo, and something like the 300 Blackout??

People have been fiddling with this round for YEARS, when it was still called .300 whisper, or 300 Fireball, or 30-221, or .300-221, etc

I even turned some custom copper bullets for my 30-221 years before "300 BLK" ever existed.

Its funny how it didn't break out until they came up with a cool sounding name for it. If the 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 spc had a cool, call of duty style hype name I'm sure they would be even more popular. I just don't get the fascination with it, ill stick with my 6.8 and the numerous bullet/powder options. After all cans are illegal in MN so I prefer the superior supersonic round.

It didn't break out until they got major manufacturer support. 300 whisper is weaker than heavy .223, where as my 7.5" 300blk is stronger than .357 magnum. I'm getting a 155gr bullet @ 1800fps out of a barrel shorter than my finger spread.

Blackout has the advantage of using common brass for a parent case, and all the parts of an AR except the barrel - with full capacity on magazines. Something 6.5 and 6.8 lack. You need a new bolt, barrel, and either different followers or you have down-graded mag capacity. When you're looking to add power to the shorter range of the M4 platform, you get it for less trouble and trade offs with the 300blk. It's not the most powerful round you can cram into the AR15 platform, and no one's claiming it is.

I never set out to be a fanboy of the round. I got one on a whim when I had started out looking into the x39 bolts for the AR and why they were breaking lugs. Now I have 2, and I love shooting them. Less recoil, more energy, almost as accurate (I'm still working on my load development) - and all I needed to make the ammo was a set of dies.

This comment makes no sense. 300blk is 300 whisper within a couple thousandths - throat and something else is slightly different. I do think they did it to gain a little velocity. Some variations of the .300 whisper was done to utilize .223 brass instead of being forced to use fireball brass.

You think a subsonic 220gr has more KE than a supersonic 62gr? It has a better power factor, but is half the ft-lbs. That's what I was getting at. I look at whisper as intended for heavy subs, which was the reference I intended to make.

I'm averaging just over 1800fps with a 155gr SMK out of my 7.5" Blk - which puts that gun on KE par with a 62gr bullet at 2900fps at nearly double the power factor - while missing half it's barrel.

I never said that. You're baiting an argument I never made. Using the design intentions of the cartridge, whisper wasn't meant for supers. I never said you couldn't load it hotter.

It's like claiming 20gr super colibri's are a primary loading for .22lr even though they won't cycle. Does that mean .22lr was designed for subsonic unsuppressed quiet shooting? No. Can it be done - yes.

Thanks for the tips so far. I'm still interested if any factory ammo comes up for sale somewhere. I do now have reloading dies though.
