We can again carry box cutters on commercial flights

Postby cobb on Tue Mar 05, 2013 11:07 am

Yep.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-03-0 ... lanes.html
The agency will permit knives with retractable blades shorter than 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) and narrower than 1/2 inch at the widest point, TSA Administrator John Pistole said today at an aviation security conference in Brooklyn. The change, to conform with international rules, will take effect April 25.

So box cutters are again legal to carry on commercial flights. What confuses me is isn't because of box cutters that this whole thing got started? :?

No, that is false. It specifically says in the article that box cutters and razor blades are still banned.

Overseas passengers will no longer have to check the qualifying knives as they pass through the U.S. The agency will still prohibit some knives, including those with locking blades or molded handles, Pistole said. Box cutters, like those used by the Sept. 11 terrorists, and razor blades will still be banned.

You can only carry what one particular TSA agent says you can carry.

I've mistakenly carried a box cutter in my laptop bag on 3-4 flights while having a small bag of screws taken during the same period.

Dammit, my blade is 2.6" and locks. I hate sticking it in my checked luggage.

Maybe I will have to get an airplane knife. ;)

As far as box cutters, razors, etc. I guarantee you that if some Jihadi tried to hijack a plane today with a box cutter, people wouldn't be waiting around for it to play out. The stakes are higher, a controlled plane means everyone dies. I know i'd rush a machete holding hijacker with a god damned rolled up sky mall if it meant keeping my family from a jet fuel BBQ.

Molded handles???? Don't get the logic of that.

Anyway, "souvenir, novelty baseball bats less than 24 inches long" is maybe the best newly legal item.

So the usual BS, all open to interpretation of TSA and their standards.
A box cutter blade that protrudes less than an inch is more dangerous than a 2+ inch knife blade. So is it because a box cutter is now an assault knife? :?

Just fly 1st class, they never had to give up metal serrated butter knives. Or just sharpen you own credit card, especially the new metal ones.
