The BIG gun

Postby armedwalleye on Sat Mar 02, 2013 4:50 pm

Well, I've got one to cross off the bucket list.
Happened into Boone's Guns in Isle today, just kicking tires, and here's this real live Barrett .50 sitting on the counter. Talked to the young lady working there and told her I'd really like to shoot one of those someday, and her reply was "How about today?" $15 per round, plus tax. Gotta know I hopped on that. WOW. Recoil wasn't near what I would have expected, but the roar of that thing and the concussion from the muzzle brake was incredible!!! I repeat: WOW! Now if I could do that on a mile long range....Gotta go get a drink of water. Been smiling so wide my teeth are drying out!

Atomic Tactical had one on consignment yesterday. Most amazed by the size of the muzzle brake. I have roof vents
smaller than that!

I've also fired a Barret .50 cal.

It's no worse than a 12 gauge.

Yep, it's not bad at all.

When I hear $15 a round, makes me shudder to think of the ammo we burned through on the M2 during Army machine gun ranges and tank gunnery.

I have a fair amount of time behind a Barrett .50. The recoil is manageable, probably no worse than a 12 gauge relative to pain generated, but the blast is exhausting. I've spent hours shooting trap with a 12 gauge, but I doubt I would ever want to put that many rounds through a Barrett in a day, even setting cost aside.

Why pay that much to shoot a 50BMG - surplus ammo can be boughtt for $3/round.
After I get my range built, my 50's are available, with my supervision, to shoot.
Recoil on a target 50BMG is like a 243 or a 20ga - very manageable.
I even put on a Ladies Shoot for the 50BMG at OGClub Nov 2011.

My specialized target rounds using 800 grain solid brass projectiles can be reloaded for $3.25 each.

I believe ERUD still has his gun available ForSale, his is higher quality than mine, but still very fun to shoot.

During FCSA Match competitions, we typically shoot 50 rounds minimum per class with 4 classes possible.
If interested in this type of long range (1000 yard) shooting, please contact me.

If anyone has contacts with Harris riflerange, please contact me. I started talking with them two years ago before ending up in hospital with surgery on my legs. Recuperation made me drop many projects, this was one I should have continued, my mistake.

No worse than a 12 ga auto with low recoil rounds is what you meant right?

One day I will have a Barrett... Anyone wanna buy a kidney?

Getting a Barrett someday is definitely on my list. I may go 338 Lapua though. That will still reach out and touch someone. The issue is that if I buy one my wife would probably use one of my other guns on me.

I shot the short barrel version of the Barrett at Bill's a few year ago...holy cow.

Just like you said, recoil is not bad...concussion is a different story.
The muzzle blast of the shorter barrel was hot too...after 4 shots I felt like I had sunburn..lol

Biggest thing is to shoot with your mouth closed. The recoil isn't bad, but the concussion will rattle your fillings :)

M82A1 is also on my bucket list. Would need to start reloading though. Can't afford $8/pull for factory loaded stuff....

If any of you guys are really looking to get into a .50, I do have a McMillan Tac-50 complete package that I am willing to sell. Everything you need to shoot and reload, wouldn't need a single additional item to be up and running. Not cheap, but nothing about .50's ever really is.

The Tac-50 is accurate in ways that a Barrett can only dream of....

PM or email for details.

I've never shot one, but by all reports the McMillan rifles are truly excellent. I note that Fleet Farm is a McMillan dealer and they have a few on the rack for sale at the Baxter Shooting Center's Pro Shop. IIRC, I believe I saw a Barrett or two there also.

The Barretts are good and FUN, and some models are accurate.
I really applaud Ronnie Barrett for the design of his rifles and his support of our 2nd Amendment rights, however having the name "Barrett" attached to your rifle WILL cost you dollars.
The best M82 out there, fully tweaked for accuracy, has only delivered a 10.75" group at 1000 yards.
The McMillians can do half that, if the shooter does his part.
Many AR-50's shoot in the 5-8" range repeatedly, if again the "nut" (shooter) behind the gun does his part with proper reloads and reading the Wind which applies to all rifles.

After the weather warms up a bit more, we should have a FUN SHOOT for 50's at Oakdale Gun Club upon their approval. The Ladies Shoot was well received although it was snowing heavily that day.

My wife shot the Barrett at Bills. The recoil is less than my 12 shooting slugs.

Fun gun. And if you're a girl, all you have to do is have an empty .50 casing with you at a gun show and you'll have all the guys you could ever not want.
