Scope rings

Postby LumberZach on Tue Mar 05, 2013 11:27 am

What do people like for scope rings? Usually I just get whichever cheap pack fleet farm has, but those have always been .22's and such. Accuracy is main concern, so what do people like?

Thanks

Zach, do you check your PMs?

I prefer the Burris Signature Zee rings myself. Almost all my rifles wear them.

Scope rings

Badger Ordnance is tough to beat if they are going on a picatinny rail. Burris XT rings are decent if you are on a budget.

I have settled on two rings. Burris extreme tactical and warne rings. Both work very well.

Another vote for Warne rings. Have had the best luck with them

Budget rings and bases- Warne Maxima steel all the way.

HIgh end stuff- Badger and Leupold MK4

The bases are just as important as the rings.

In addition to improved consistency/accuracy, you'll greatly reduce the chance of evil ring marks.

On a budget and looking at something I can run to most local sporting goods stores and purchase locally, I like the Weaver Grand Slam steel rings and bases. I was recently introduced to Talley's integral base + ring 2-pc combos and REALLY like them for hunting rifles; light, high quality, affordable ($45-$50 per complete set) and one less set of screws to worry about mating your optic to the rifle than separate base+ring sets since the bottom half of the scopes ring are milled directly into the front/rear base that attaches to the rifle. I have a Warne 1-pc base + rings on my Remington 700 LTR knockoff and they've held up well and maintained zero even after the typical abuses that come with field handling versus just looking pretty in the safe or on a benchrest.

Badger Ordnance if money is no object.

Burris XTR if it is. (SWFA sells them for $30)

If you're going to spend more than a couple hundred bucks on a scope, it's worth it to lap the rings before you mount the scope. Basically you are aligning the front and rear bores of the scope rings so that you don't stress the scope tube when you mount it.

It is also worth using a torque wrench to tighten the scope caps on the rings. Like tightening lug nuts on a car, go in a cross pattern and start light, increment to the right torque (usually 22-28 in#)

As someone else mentioned, the base is just as important. I'm a big fan of one piece bases because it's one less thing that can be misaligned.

Ok, thanks for all of the info guys. So far my plan is the burris XTR rings, a millet one piece base, and one of these wheeler mounting kits that has the lapping and torque wrench included. Has anyone used the wheeler kits before? Seem to be pretty popular and I am finding them all over.

Thanks,

I don't know if you read anything about the Burris Signature Zee rings when I recommended them, but besides protecting the finish on your scope, the inserts also eliminate the need to lap them as they gimbal in the rings to auto align. In the case of two piece mounts, lapping, like a fingerprint, is unique to how those two base halves register on the particular rifle you are mounting them on. Change bases or rifles and you will need to re-lap the rings. That is not necessary with Burris Signature Rings. I have a drawer full of other brand, functional rings that I eventually replaced with Signature Zee's over time. Not being a man of deep pockets, replacing those functional rings with the Zee's was for a good reason. Yes, they are not Tacti-Cool looking, but fit and function trump cosmetics for me.

just sayin...

To be honest, I know others love the Z rings but I have had nothing but trouble with them.

+1 with Yuppie's recommendation. I just put on a set of the Weaver Grand Slam steel rings with a Weaver base on a friend's rifle. For $30 rings, these went on straight and true without any tweaking required. I put the alignment bars on and was right on the first time. Even my Badgers and Seekins rings did not go on without a little bit of tweaking. Hopefully, they will hold up.

Also, I like that you can mess with the inserts to ensure that the elevation and windage is as close to the "center" as possible when sighting in.

Talley lightweights and DNZ deadnutz are also rings I like. The "tactical" rings are overkill for anything I hunt with.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Honestly, I am concerned about things like inserts just for the sake that they are one more thing to add and have the possibility to shift. Although this will primarily be a deer hunting rifle, I plan on trying to learn some long range shooting with it (not that I am going to shoot deer at any large distances). So hopefully I get a base and rings that will squeeze all of the accuracy out of my scope and rifle that I can. That is why the burris rings are looking pretty good to me as of right now.

Thanks guys,
