I didn't read the whole article. But I have no problem with them using intel that someone was in a mental hospital to confiscate illegally owned guns.

It appears that California is crosschecking its firearm registration database with felons, domestic abusers, and mentally ill undergoing involuntary committment. Sounds good...those folks shouldn't have firearms. The part that gives one pause is the part about the firearms registration database. True, they're only going after the firearms of criminals. So far. Of course, it only takes a few legislative sessions, some money from Bloomberg, and an arrogant disregard for the constitutional rights of one's constituents to make ALL gun owners criminals.

"Other states may lack confiscation programs because they don’t track purchases as closely as California, which requires most weapons sales go through a licensed dealer and be reported.

“Very, very few states have an archive of firearm owners like we have,” said Wintemute, who helped set up the program.

Merely being in a database of registered gun owners and having a “disqualifying event,” such as a felony conviction or restraining order, isn’t sufficient evidence for a search warrant, Marsh said March 5 during raids in San Bernardino County. So the agents often must talk their way into a residence to look for weapons, he said.

Never Ever let A Officer Into Your House Willingly !!! NEVER
Right or wrong, once in it will be real hard to get them out empty handed.

Looks to me like they are putting names and registered at some point firearms together and going FISHING.

No warrant, no guaranteed entry.

2,000 guns, 33 officers, 1 year.

5 guns per day. 33 Officers.

About a gun per officer per week.

Unless I missed it, I didn't see any details on what is done with the confiscated guns. Plenty of folks who are unable to legally possess firearms today may be off the list at some point in the future. If they are unable to easily reclaim their firearms once they have proof their rights have been restored, then this is a "big **** deal"...

You must have missed the line that said something like "most of the weapons seized are destroyed". ;) That and the part about the prohibited people can't have access, so they took her gun and two registered to her husband as well didn't sit well with me... I could accept it for convicted felons, as long as the seized stuff was warehoused instead of destroyed in cases where rights can be reinstated. Not so sure I like the criteria for the mental health side - since the lady in the story was claiming the story was exaggerated by the nurse...

Yup. It's just one step in a long journey for them. If I lived in CA, I'd be wondering if I was next.

2 days in a mental hospital is a pretty good indication she wasn't nuts. 2 days is about how long it takes for the staff to say, "Yeah, let her go; she's not nuts".

"Mentally Ill" as a disqualifying event is what scares the crap outta me.

"Mentally Ill" is going to turn in to the "go to" factor. How long before people decide that pro-liberty folks are mentally ill. Or religious people. Or anyone who has ever taken an anti-depressant, or an anti-anxiety med, or whatever.

If they look hard enough it's likely they can find a reason you're "mentally ill". You'll notice that they don't have any medical descriptions for what constitutes mentally ill. Moreover, there is no due process here.

Maybe it's time to do away with the wasted expense of the court system and jest let doctors, nurses and the county
health professionals decide who is qualified to have a gun, would save a lot of money that we could put into programs
like California must have because I must have missed where the court made the decision. WTF A Nurse !@#$%
