Savage model 11

Postby LumberZach on Sat Mar 23, 2013 9:48 pm

Quick rant,

I have been looking for a savage model 11 for a little while, and I just started looking seriously for them. THERE ARE NO .308'S ANYWHERE. I can find plenty of model 11's, but no one has one in .308! Very upset about this, and shocked! I just can't believe it, bolt action rifles are not supposed to be so scarce! I know it is a bad time for guns, but gosh!

End Rant.

I've been somewhat seriously looking around for a CZ 550 HB in .308. There are very few, if any ever to be found, and the price is +$100+ last fall.
I don't get that either.

R&R has various types of Savage 11's in 308.

I have been back and forth with the hog hunter but I decided I want to go with the classic rifle first. I will probably be ordering one first thing in the morning from Arnzen, I just cannot believe no one has a .308 in this. I am pretty excited to get this rifle, hopefully it gets here soon!

Why not pick up a short action model 11 in an available caliber and swap out for a .308 barrel? A local fellow sells new, unfired take-off Savage barrels. He has sporter profile .308 barrels for $85.00 and varmint profile for $205.00. It takes maybe 20 minutes to swap out barrels and 15 of that would be disassembling and reassembling. You can sell the unfired take-off barrel to offset the price, or keep it in case you ever want some diversity. I have several alternate caliber barrels for my two Model 12s, depending upon what I'm in the mood to shoot. It's even easier than swapping AR15 barrels.

I have though about getting a short action and swapping, but for the amount of money I am spending, and that I am not exactly looking to shoot sub-moa groups I would rather just buy it as is .308. The idea of swapping too a heavy barrel after a while has been in my head for a while though.

You might be surprised how well a regular savage shoots. Be sure to get the accutrigger.

This.

One of the main reasons I choose to buy a Hog Hunter was the accutrigger. That plus irons and the reputation that Savage has for out of the box accuracy.

My buddy got his wife a .243 axis I think? Crappy stock, no accutrigger, nothing special, cheap scope (whatever came in the $350 gander package), and it'd still print cloverleafs with off the shelf hunting ammo at 100yds.

Trigger sucked too. More creep than a marylin manson tribute band.

The accutrigger on my little .22lr I just got is the next best thing to the one on my Cooper.

That 6-18x42 side focus buckmasters in the market place would be a honey of a scope on a .308. It's what I have on my .25-06.

Update

I put a customer request in at Arnzen for an 11, but locally I found an identical Savage in stainless for a little more... I am not sure what to do.

So I have yet another question for any of you savage guys.

I was looking around doing some research and it looks like the package model that I ordered does not come with an accustock. I have not yet received the gun yet, I am wondering if I should cancel the order and find a model with an accustock, or if I should save up and get a nicer after market stock. Any opinions from you guys? Any issues with an accustock, or is it not all that great anyway? Also, WHY WHY WHY would they add a scope and take off the accustock?? This rifle is becoming very frustrating and I don't even have it yet.

Thanks
