USPSA New Shooter Orientation - April 20th - Pine Island

Postby mbree on Mon Mar 25, 2013 10:22 am

Pine Island Practical Shooters (PIPS, MN13) will again hold a USPSA Orientation class for those new shooters interested in learning the USPSA rules and to take a try at shooting a short course or two. It will run 10am-1pm on 4/20/2013 at the Pine Island White Pines Sportsman's Club. http://www.piwpsc.org/

Bring your hearing and eye protection, gun, ammo (50 rounds should get you through twice), magazines, and a holster and mag carriers if you have them.

No cost to you. It is free for new shooters to attend and try it out.

I might have to make it to that. Will it be in the new clubhouse and range? It'd be worth going just to check out the new facilities.

Is the Winter Storm Shoot on 3/30 new shooter friendly? I'm game for some orientation but would love to start sooner if possible.

Depends on what you mean by new shooter friendly.

The people are most always new shooter friendly (if you find one who is not, let me know privately). We ask all new shooters to identify themselves so he/she can be paired with an experienced shooter for the match to help them work through it. So the orientation is not a requirement.

But...there is always one of those...the courses we set up for our weekend matches tend to be more complex and challenging than our weekly Wednesday matches, and certainly more than what we set up for the orientation. As long as safety is put before speed, you will be fine.

Let me translate for Monte: You are totally welcome, but for this match hold on to your **** hat! You may crash and burn the stages but you will have fun.

I am new, and just have a regular Glock 19. Will that be acceptable for USPSA? I'm not worried about earning trophies or anything like that, just having fun and meeting other shooters.

That's what I will be shooting if I can make it. Not that I am a grand master or anything, but you will be in good company with a G19. Just keep in mind you need to bring or borrow mag pouches and extra mags.

USPSA "Production" division does not allow various changes to the gun, from "stock"! ... a Glock 19 is perfectly fine!

No need to go out and buy a boatload of gear, neither! It sounds like the orientation stages will be small ... and I suspect they'll be perfectly ok with retrieving fresh mags from yer back pockets! At OGC, we'd often let new shooters start from "low ready", if they didn't otherwise have an appropriate (not cross-draw, shoulder, 'er ankle) holster!

If ya insist on buyin' some gear, I'd highly recommend ya go to the 3/30 match ... bring glasses 'n earplugs ... don't bring a gun! ... if yer there to scout gear, then do that! ... if yer there to shoot, then do that! ... not both! ;) Ask around ... most anyone'll be more than happy to tell ya what they think! :? Anyone with glasses 'n earplugs is always welcome to come 'n watch any USPSA match! ... mingle with the squad! ... but stay behind the start position!

FWIW, the member on this forum known as westberg owns/operates unholstered.com! ... that range belt and holster will serve ya very well, fer a lotta years!

... one other thing ... if ya got a gun that's otherwise well-suited to "Production" (most any SA/DA 'er DAO ... 9mm = .40 = .45), but ya only got 2 - 3 standard-capacity (closer to 15rd, than 10rd) mags ... and/or, 0, 1, 'er 2 mag-pouches, I recommend ya sign-up fer "Ltd (minor)" (9mm < .40) and shoot to slide-lock! ... "Production" requires ya to restrict yer mags to 10rd+1 ... if ya ain't got 'nuff mags/pouches, yer gonna get frustrated! "Ltd (minor)" is perfectly fine! ... to start! ... yer not gonna be winnin' any trophies anyhow! ... every division shoots the same stages! ... jest a matter of how many reloads ya gotta do ... when ... and where! If ya shoot 'til it runs outta bullets, and reload then! ... wherever ya happen to be! ... that'll be a couple less things to worry 'bout ... to start! Image

Excellent. It might be drinking from a fire hose but I know it'll be fun... And warmer than the first 3-gun of the year. :)

I just received word from the Match Director for the 3/30 Winter Storm Shoot, that the match is cancelled :( Too much mud with all the late construction, we would be getting folks stuck and damaging too much new soil.

The new shooter orientation is a go on April 20, I just know some were talking about 3/30 match in this thread as well.

I was really looking forward to the the match. I am itching to get going.

Official Announcement:

"Folks: I visited our new range and bays last night. Although the bays themselves seem to be in decent shape, the grounds, entry, and driveway are simply a mess. This was all new construction from last Oct-Dec and it simply needs time to settle and dry out. If we had the shoot the way it was last night, we would be wading through ankle-deep mud to and from the bays and getting cars stuck in the entry. The rest of the snow melt and rain on Saturday will make it even worse. Given these range conditions, I just cannot allow the event to happen this weekend. Rescheduling will be difficult given how full calendars are at this point, though I will consider what might be done. We hope to hold our Single Stack Challenge as planned at the end of April and I'm optimistic the grounds will have settled by then."
