As Grousemaster said, bring your ID and have a clean record.

The dealer will have you fill out a 4473 and they will run an NICS background check on you. Assuming you clear the NICS check you pay for your shotgun and take it home.

Assuming its a standard hunting type shotgun the above is correct. If it is a semi auto with certain features, like tactical style shotguns you may need a permit to purchase.

Gonna let myself get a bonk on the head here, but I thought "standard" kinds of long arms could be sold to residents of other states and that restriction was only for handguns and ubiquitously evil assault weapons...

Please correct my understanding if it is incorrect.

My personal recent experience with two separate long gun purchases in MN is that some dealers can't comply with the laws of my home state (TX). Some Wally's can, some can't, Gander can, Dick's can't.....

I have as recently as a few months ago purchased a long gun from a store while in another state (WI). It has been my experience that I've had no problems doing so with shotguns or bolt rifles. Handguns are for sure not going to happen but I'm unsure of semi auto center fire rifles that are black as I've never tried.

Some stores don't care to read the law to see who they can sell longguns to as the state regulation on purchase of longguns must be similar.

For example, you can't sell to california resident because they have mandatory waiting periods on firearm purchases. However, resident of Texas has no such limitations imposed by their state.

So as long as your state law is similar, your state allows purchase of longguns out of state, does not have limits on contiguous states clause and you are purchasing a shotgun that has none assault classification features, you should be able to purchase one.

Having a store look up legal limitation will be hard so that is why some just refuse the sales.

The confusion arises because laws for private parties and for dealers are not the same. A private transaction across state lines of any firearm needs to go through a dealer. Including hunting rifles and shotguns.

A dealer can sell a rifle or shotgun directly to an individual from another state provided the laws of the buyer's state, AND the dealer's state, are followed.

Here is a good location to check state to state laws, good add to ones bookmarks.
Tend to be more up to date than a google search.

http://www.atf.gov/publications/firearms/state-laws/31st-edition/index.html

Check out the number of pages of restrictions from state to state,
Ca. has 69 pgs.
MN. 12 pgs.
Wy. 2 pgs.

Thanks Joe, that's kind of what I thought. I appreciate the inside baseball. 8-)
