Entry Level Gun Safe @ Costco

Postby Erik508 on Fri Apr 05, 2013 8:48 pm

I noticed Costco has the Bighorn 19ECB safe going on sale on the 11th for $569 ($200 off regular price). I think they sold out last time they did this sale- if you want one you can get your order in now and costco will do a price match since it's within 30 days of purchase. price includes shipping.

It's an electronic lock, so it's not everyone's cup of tea. But it fits the bill perfectly for me, thought I'd share.

Got one last time.

Decent product for the price. I'm sure many here could rail on this, that or the other thing about this RSC, but for under $600 it can't be touched, IMHO.

Meh. Return on investment, diminishing returns, etc. etc. etc. My cheap gun storage keeps kids and meth-heads out. If a skilled thief decides that my collection or yours is worth taking, it's getting took. $600 safe and a rider on the homeowners insurance. GTG

Agree completely, except in my case $150 StackOns. The money saved over a competent gun safe buys a lot of insurance.

At some point you'll spend more on insurance than a safe.

I've seen threads about the cost of insurance on this and other boards before, and I've stayed out of them. The reason is that I've checked and double checked with my insurance guy about my coverage (believe me, I'm a nervous pervous about these things), and he assures me it's fine. I tell him the numbers and the values and he bills me accordingly. It just isn't that much. Besides, your statement implies that you don't expect your guns to be covered by insurance. I bet that's not the case.

If you don't provide the Insurance Company all of your Serial Numbers of Firearms including Serial Numbers of any accessories that have numbers, and complete detailed pictures labeled with pointers to serial numbers, = you will receive payment on a amortized cost of standard rifle using their depreciating scale.

And Insurance Companies will provide this data to local, state, and federal authorities upon request.

I trust my safes, my gun, and my guard dog, Murphy T.
Not my insurance company.

I still won't have to worry about moving around a 400 lb safe that only stores about half my firearms and will only keep thieves out about 10 minutes longer than my StackOns. An entry-level safe like the BigHorn is NOT such a secure device that any smart person would forego an insurance rider on their firearms.

Yes. That's inherent to the concept of an insurance rider on a homeowner's policy. But seriously....you don't keep photos and serial numbers anyway?

I do have digital pictures and details on most of my rifles. I need to update the list again. Its all stored in a removeable hard drive stored in a secure location.

NOT at the Insurance company - they only know I have an old 12 gage and a single-shot 22 rifle, but they suspect more.

I agree. Photos are for YOUR own record keeping and insurance that you are keeping track of your firearms. Heaven forbid something gets lost, stolen, etc, you have proof of ownership, serial numbers, etc. It's just record keeping....and just because you have it, doesn't mean that you need to share it with anyone else either. I think it's a good idea to have photos and other documentation of ALL your valuables, not just guns. I don't mean things like your home entertainment system, computers, etc, rather things like grandma's silver serving set that's 150 years old or more from great-grandma and other family heirlooms, gold, silver, coins, hard-if-not-impossible things to replace due to their sentimental as well as financial value.

Maybe some day, but in the near future I don't see myself spending $1000 or more to have ultra secure storage. Controlling casual or less than casual access is easily done with the stackons.

Not sure I want to give my insurance company all my details...but I should revisit my policy, for what I have it's possibly covered by the standard.

Some insurance companies offer discounts with certain class of safes if you own a lot of guns with the firearm insurance. I get enough discount that the expensive safe will pay for itself.

But yeah, I am not all that concerned about skilled thieves as I will lose, but I am concerned about children and fire mostly.
