What's with all the Kimber hate? I have a few, they run like crazy. All are series one guns, two are older than Yonkers.

I personally grew up going to the gun range almost every weekend all summer long, from the age of 5 until about 10-12 then it tapered off until I was not going. Through high school and into college I still enjoyed the thought of shooting but I did not do any. It was not until I was about 27 that I had enough of an interest to go buy a gun and go to the range and shoot. I would not worry about it too much, if you have a gun for him already I would hang onto it, someday he will appreciate it. Maybe even leave a little note with it explaining why you got it for him an what not JIC something happens and you are not able to personally tell him.

I guess I have a little different point of view. I remember when I was 9 or 10 going up north for grouse hunting with my dad. now I did get to shoot a 22lr but I was only aloud to walk 10 feet behind my dad while he hunted. he never showed me how to clean a gun, shoot a gun or how to hunt. But let me tell you those time are a soft spot in my cold dead heart. about 8 years ago when I got into guns he mentioned going to the range with me but never did. One night he asked if the local shop I went to bought guns because he was going to sell his dads gun. I got a bit mad and told him he should give it to his oldest sun "Me". I finally got it off his hands a year later. Now the story gets better because he comes into town two years ago and gives my sister his shot gun. I guess there is no traditions any more. It was almost as hard to get my moms dads guns from him. His exact words were "i don't care if the rust away in the basement" one persons junk I guess. I hold all threw guns from my grandfathers dearly and will never sell them. with luck my nephew will like to hunt some day.

sorry for the rant but I guess it hit a nerve. Maybe your grand children will love them.

Spent part of Easter weekend with my three grown daughters at the range. They all want to know when they get their own AR. Two also want a 45 auto and the other just a 22 handgun. I feel the drain on my bank account. But, on the other hand my wife fully supports the idea of buying them firearms, as an investment.

Sounds like a normal 18 year old. I'm sure he finds it hard to have fun with his dear old dad.

As far as the rest of you have guns to be left behind have you looked into adoption ;-)

I am available for adoption to any home that has guns to pass down. I am even open to alternative family lifestyles where I might be adopted by more than one family. We can work out a range schedule, er I mean "visitation" schedule.

I thought you vere talking about different kind of alternate lifestyles, as in being adopted by a gay couple. :o
But hey, free guns are free guns, just don't let the new parents "tuck you in" at night.

If they have guns they want to pass down to me, who am I to judge?

I'm about to turn 28 and remember only a couple times when I went shooting with my dad. I always liked guns when I was a kid, and then in the recent years my father has won some different guns at outdoor/hunting banquets. I always ask him where my gun is, this year he won a Mossberg 715T that he's going to give me for my birthday, it'll be the first gun he's given me. He has a number of hunting rifles, shotguns, and his dads High Standard pistol, he's alway said I can use them whenever I want but no one in my family has any real interest in just shooting.

My brother has a couple guns and he only hunts, never target shoots. I can only hope my 4 year old son has some interest in shooting when he grows up and we can share in that, if he doesn't then thats OK too, just leaves more room in the gun safe for me.

But as far as your son OP, I say keep it for him, I can say myself that I wish my dad had offered to get me a gun when I was younger. Keep it for a time when you ask him if he'd like to go shooting and he says yes, then tell him you've got something you'd like to give him and that you've been keeping for him, spend a special time out shooting with him then. If he doesn't come around, thats OK too, not everyone enjoys shooting.

I wasn't planning on that exactly, but did plan on giving him a very nice 25th Anniversary Kimber that was lightly customized by Novaks for his high school graduation in June. Anybody else here (of a certain age) go through this with their kids? I wanted to get him something that was less disposable than most of the crap kids get or want. I suppose I could get him a $100 iTunes gift card and call it a day. Give him the gun? Keep it and give it to him later if he changes his mindset? Thoughts?

Maybe ask him what would mean something to him rather than a gift that just means something to you?
