1911 thoughts; maybe carry...

I'm leaning hard towards buying my 1st 1911. Trying to get a decent quality "all round" 1911; preferablely under or near $1000 in the Commander 4.25" size.

I know there is a plethora of models and options out there. Looking for some opinions.

Would be used for range and home defense; as well as carry if I wanted.

Plenty of good choices.

Ruger's new commander model is around $700; you can also usually find an actual Colt in your price range.

I bought an ATI FX 45 "Fatboy" and was torn between this one and a Citadel model or the same size. The citadel felt very good in my hand, well balanced, constructed well. I almost went with that one simply because of how good my first impressions were. However, i went with the ATI because it was lighter and had a double wide magazine. The utility of these features outweighed the impression I got from the Citadel, IMHO.

And who knows, maybe i wi still get that citadel one day.

Bills dialsappointed me by not having any of the compacts available to try out, but I have been happy with the one I got so far. XDM45 was kind enough to offer me a chance to shoot his XDS when I was making my decision. I'd be happy to do the same if interested.

All steel gets a bit hefty on long days so I carry alloy framed Kimber. It is a true custom with officer size frame and 4 inch upper. and YES Kimber did make these.

I've carried a Kimber SIS and Kimber CDP in the "Commander" size and had no issues. I do prefer carrying a fullsize 1911 - the Springfield TRP or Springfield Loaded would be my recommendation - though a bit higher than the $1000 you mention..

Thanks!

I had a Ruger commander. It ate everything and was reliable. It was a hog leg for ccw though. All steel. I went with a Sig 1911 c3 for carry and love it. Light, reliable, fun to shoot. It would be in your price range too.

I've been carrying a full size 1911.....no issues. It's a Colt Gov't model. You'll pay more the Colt now...but it will be worth more later
