For those that knew what I was going to do after the steel shoot, and those that didn't.

230 grain Federal HST into 6 gallons of water. It made it through 2 of them, and stopped in the 3rd.

Yep, and I went home with one of my backup mags one round light. I felt almost naked

Keep in mind there's more to shooting than just shooting. My shooting is pretty average, but I finish a little higher than average because my draw and reloads are fast and smooth.

When you have a shooting "plateau," it's a good time to sit back and assess what part of your shooting needs the most improvement, and then work on that. Frequently you'll find it's not your accuracy. I don't compete outside of these steel shoots, nor do I practice between them, but I got those fundamentals down a few years ago with some concentrated and directed practice, and just haven't seem to have forgotten them. I firmly believe that anyone can improve. All it takes is some training and a good understanding of the mechanics of what you're doing. Now I just have to stop being a parent, stop working, and maybe leave one of the bands I'm in and I'll have time to train and practice more!

Oh, Benny was taking some people off to the side and showing them a good way to transition between hands. I tagged along, even though I thought I had it down, and got something very useful out of it. Thanks, Benny!

Thanks Benny and China for another great day. Dawn and I talked about it all the way home (damn road construction) and up to the farm. We are both expecting the class next week to improve our times, the good bad is some of the same shooters are also taking it. So in the end, times get better and Benny still wins......... At least I got a hug from RTK. David great finish on the man v man.
This weekend Dawn got a taste of steel plates at 100 yds with a EBR and now can't get enough. We test fired hers because no sights yet. but she is already asking what my JP AR-15 cost. This is going to get real expensive.
CMJ it was great meeting your wife and she did very well for her first time. You other guy's need to get your wife's and girlfriends involved.

I see another clear speed class consisting of Selurcspi, Fast351, John L, and Dave Slam AKA shooters I will never beat unless their guns malfunction.

But I own a Glock, so....

In all seriousness, you are a good enough shooter that if you took a little time to dedicate to it, you would be right up there with us. I am not a shooter that was born with natural skill in pistol shooting, meaning that if I can do it (and I'm not quite sure what Ive done to be honest ) you can too.

There are a lot of things you can do to improve your shooting, and several are free aside from some time. You have heard the old dry fire spiel I'm sure, but the really good shooters probably pull the trigger 100 times for every real round they send down range. You can also do things like practicing speed reloads (although that's not a big difference in our bang-ping game except man vs man), draws, transitions, and the like, in your basement for essentially free.

And remember that while spending money on gear is fun, it's absolutely not necessary. I'm running a box stock Glock 17 with Tru-glo sights, a Blackhawk Serpa holster (without the CPC lock) and a simple 2 mag pouch paddle from G&G. I've been running the same gear for a long time though, and it helps to get comfortable with it. I see a lot of guys fall into the gadget trap and showing up at matches with different gear every time. Well hell, how can you expect consistent performance when you keep changing the formula?

My goal eventually is to beat Benny using my stock gear. Someday...

I completely agree, Mike. I use a totally stock Glock as well, and I don't even clean it! I'll set aside some time this winter for that...

I'm wondering if I should find some lower-power 185-grain loads for it, though. I shoot whatever is cheapest at Walmart through it, which is normally 230 grain WWB. Is that something I can get easy enough, or is that a handloader sort of thing?

What I notice about all you good shooters is how it appears so effortless in your motions. Your actions don't appear fast your time ends up fast. But you make good targets for us at the bottom........
But really looking at the time is just something to do at home after the match, the real pleasure is having a day of fun with you all...............Thanks

* I have no natural talent.
* I didn't start shooting competively until my 55th (this) year. If you don't think this matters you should see Westberg's
son I'm told he started at 10.
* I'm cross-dominant. I knew it was a problem with shotgunning, but now I'm thinking it's a problem with pistol as well.
* I'm obese. This matters when trying to draw, do mag changes and running (waddling).
* I have other hobbies that take up the time between matches.
* Did I say I have no natural talent?

So I'll never beat Benny, China, Dawn, Westberg, David Slam and most of the rest of you unless your gun malfunctions. That's life.

I have found that competitive shooters, from the national class guys to the newest rookie, are for the most part some of the nicest people you can find, they are willing to help not just other shooters but with the operation (Course setup, teardown, pasting, reseting targets) of the match. This is why I enjoy shooting, plus it gives me an opprotunity to practice gun handling, reloading and shooting under some level of stress (without working on the two way range )

I don't really care if I beat people like Keith, selurspi, Fast 351and any of the Westburg's (not that I could, unless they forgot their guns and holsters.) I do it because it is usually a great day with great people.

Good is a relative term - it is not about how good you shoot - it is all about how mad you are at the targets!!! Right now - my nickname should be Captain Furious........ Watch out...
