pre 64 action in a 1972 model 70

Postby cornfed29 on Wed May 08, 2013 6:24 pm

Looking to replace the action in my 70 with a pretty 64. Can this be done? I see the new 70s are coming with the pre-64 style action.

The short answer is, yes it's possible but why would you want to? By the time you get done modifying the breech face of the barrel and stock to fit a different action you'll spend as much as just buying a complete pre 64 rifle.

Yes, why would you do this, I have owned at least 4 of those post 64s and have shot a couple more and they are some of the most accurate rifles I have ever fired.

I also had 3 pre 64s (still have one) and they are my favoreit rifles.
It would take a lot of work to switch actions, what caliber is yours?

I've heard the post 64 action was one of the biggest changes they made from pre-64 to post-64 model. Mine is in 308. I'm no gunsmith, so I don't know all that would go into it. Thanks.

That 1972 mod 70 you have is a fine rifle in my opinion, unless you already have a pre 64 action they are hard to find and spendy, you can change the action if you want but you will gain nothing and will spend a lot of money.
If I had an action laying around I would build a whole new rifle on it.

Thank you all for the input. I love the way she shoots now. Just a thought I had, so I figured I'd fish for input. I'd be happy to burn some powder some day if any of ya live in/near the Twin Cities metro.
