Not sure how I feel about some nimrod buying one of these. And adds a new take on hunting. Way to high of price right now, but if it's popular, prices will drop after homeland security buys a few million of them

I think we just found a gun that even the open guys in 3 gun would complain about someone having.

I heard that in version 2.0 you can preprogram in the course of fire for a stage.

Don't use the Apple maps version of that!

Is this substantially less sporting than using a Fish Finder or Underwater camera?

Yes.

Both a fish finder, and an underwater camera do little more than notify you of the presence of fish. it doesn't bait the hook, it doesn't set the hook. Both of the mentioned items are on the same plane as game camera's.

Well, if it can make a deer hold still for 5 seconds or so, that would be a nice add-on feature too.

Suitable for a stationary target in the open. A deer moving through brush? Not so much.

OK. But I'm inclined to view this new rifle as just another triumph of technology over sportsmanship. If we all really needed the game we shoot in order to survive, or if it were even safe to eat the fish we catch, then OK, but it's not man against nature anymore...it's technology over nature. Fishing and hunting.

IMHO.

Smart Shooting Rifle Introduced

Postby Erud on Thu May 16, 2013 11:55 am

"On a firing range just outside Austin in the city of Liberty Hill, a novice shooter holds one and takes aim at a target 500 yards away. Normally it takes years of practice to hit something at that distance. But this shooter nails it on the first try."

Anyone requiring "years of practice" to hit a target at 500 yards has some really crappy practice methods....

Regardless of that, the noob-friendliness of this gun is tough to understate: Via Ars Technica:

That's not too shabby. Don't think I could pull that off with a regular rifle. Even with the professional spotter helping out with windage.

Just think what it will do for the military's sniper programs. The amount of actual skill needed to snipe long range targets has just dropped by a VERY LARGE amount.

I would guess a significant portion of being a good sniper involves things other than shooting.

Smart Shooting Rifle Introduced

It uses an active laser. Not a good choice for a sniper rifle. Plus it's one EMP away from being a very expensive club. Not to say they won't adopt something like this, but it's a fragile and vulnerable technology compared with iron and glass.
