All of the above posts are good and in the right direction.
I've never been a fan of the institutional educational system where children are taught to toe the line and not question authority or the teachings. Yes, they need social skills, to learn the basics, etc, and he educational system does have some value, but much like Religion, it is taught as the one one, the only way, the true way.
Take History for example, it's certainly not complete, nor is it accurate or true. Perhaps it is mostly, perhaps parts are, but it's certainly not 100%. When the teachers expound the "facts" in the books, they do so which as much authority in their voice and teaching as any preacher does when reading from his "good book". Neither one will say to their followers / students that "We don't know. We think this is what happened and how it happened; but this is only one opinion of it. It's not complete by any means, so we encourage you to question it, take from it what you will, and seek your own answers and your own truth."
That simply wouldn't work. You can't have "people" actually think for themselves!! Their minds must be molded, their spirits broken, and they must be properly trained to believe in the American Dream, to live their life as a cog working for The Man.
As Mark Twain once said, "Never let an education get in the way of your learning."
Interesting side note.............
When the counsellers in high school speak to students in their Sophomore and Senior years about what they'll do after high school graduation, they really focus on 3 areas and ask these 3 questions in some form or another.....
1) What kind of job are you going to get?
2) What college are you going into?
3) What branch of the military are you going to join?
They NEVER ask the most important question.....
4) What kind of a business are you going to start?
The first 3 are all about working for someone else, toeing the line for someone else, whereas the last one is all about YOU.
I will say that owning and running a business isn't for everyone, just like neither is working for someone else, or a certain type of work; so my point here is really that the IDEA and the POSSIBILITY, the OPTION, isn't even OFFERED or mentioned. Then again, you don't see many people giving advice that's really in your best interest. Judges and lawyers don't really tell people about Jury Nullification either, one such example.
(Yes, some college grads do start businesses, but many do not, many do not work in their field, and many are wage slaves with unforgivable student loan debt which cannot be bankrupted, unlike other debt.)
