Sig P290RS

Postby patrick on Sat Jun 01, 2013 9:34 pm

A few weeks ago I picked up a Sig P290RS and finally got to the range with it yesterday.I fired about 170 rounds.100 rounds of WWB,50 rounds of some other 115 grain FMJ's,and a few different kinds of JHP's,some 115 grainers, and some 147's.Zero malfunctions of any kind.Very accurate after getting used to it.I like DAO's so the trigger is fine for me.I was going to bring my ipod to take pictures but I forgot.Suffice it to say that I had a large ragged hole. The guy in the lane next to me told me to put up a new target because I was wasting ammo.I told him that as a long as the hole didn't get bigger I new I was doing alright. He gave it ago with a couple rounds and did very well too. Then I shot his .454 Casule. Now that's a LOT of hand gun.It took a few magazines with the Sig to get back on track after that.Kept flinching.

Any way,the Sig gets two thumbs up from me.After I order a steel guide rod, another magazine or two,and a holster it'll be ready to carry.

I have really enjoyed shooting my P290. Small enough to carry but still way better than a .380. I am looking to swap it out for another compact 9mm, the SCCY cpx2, which I bought and shot and think it is just as serviceable as the P290, for a fraction of the price.

I'm glad to hear you like your sig. I owned a couple sig sauer handguns. Didn't have good luck with either of them. One was a P250 compact with the swappable .40s&w and .357sig barrels. Gun would fail to go into battery with standard loads. Then got a sig mosquito. Ran good for about 500 or so rounds. Then had issues reliably.

Personally I'm a Ruger or Smith and Wesson kinda guy. Also had good luck with Taurus and Rossi when it's come to handguns.

Well I found your problem. You managed to pick the two Sigs with the most atrocious reliability records. :P
Seriously though - I have no dog in the fight, but I do like my Sigs, and I just thought you should know that those two are known for being basically the two most unreliable guns Sig Sauer has made.

But back on topic, I just got a P290RS myself, and I'm definitely excited to get it out and shoot!

I have a Sig 250 .40 S&W.
I've tried like heck to get it to malfunction and it has never had a hiccup.
I own 4 Sigs with the same quality as my P250.

I will say that their Mosquito is junk and shouldn't even have the Sig name on it.
But the rest of their products I would bet my life on them.

Well, I said they were the two with the worst reliability records... among Sig Sauers. :)

+1 on the mosquito for being junk. I had nothing but problems with mine.

I'm also looking for a good reliable pocket carry 9mm and am considering the p290 Rs. The only Sig I've owned was the Mosquito, but I won't hold it against Sig, since I know they have some great guns too. I don't want the 938 as I think it's too heavy for pocket carry. How's the P290 RS as far as weight? Good for pocket carry?

I know it's smaller than the G26, but larger than most .380's. I was really hoping the G42 was going to be 9mm....

I'm not a real big guy so jacket pocket would be okay.Maybe with the right holster and a pair if pants/shorts with large pockets.I don't know about jeans.I am not a fan of pocket carry so I'm really the wrong guy to ask.I can look up weight, not too heavy though.I'd like to get out to shoot it but still can't find any ammo around here.I just have a little defense stuff I don't want to burn up at the range.

As per the Sig site 20.5 ounces with magazine.A bit heavier than I would have guessed. Not too heavy for me though.I've fired llghter 9's and most had a lot more fealt recoil. The Sig is actually quite manageable for such a small pistol.

The heavy slide and combat sights make it very easy to shoot accurately. I think it's a nice package.

Glad to hear some positive reviews. Sig's LE/First Responder pricing has put the P290RS on my radar for a new pocket off-duty gun. Does anyone know if any shops in the metro have the 290 in stock? I wanna get my hands on one before I decide.

Actually, the G42 is a bit smaller than the P290. Although I think they'll need to beef up the "G43" for 9mm.
