Best way to clear an obstructed barrel?

Postby vlad1915 on Mon Jun 17, 2013 11:02 pm

I have a Sig Mosquito that has some kind of barrel obstruction. It was stored for almost a year at a friend's house and I don't know what he did to it, if anything.
What is the best way to clear the barrel without damaging it?

Use a cleaning rod with a jag tip on it and tap it out from the breech.

... so long as the rod ain't sectional, non-metallic, 'er steel (IOW, one-piece aluminum)

... ya can also go to Menards 'er Fleet Farm and find .125in round aluminum 'er brass fer maybe a $1 'er two!

Check the barrel for bulging if your friend may have fired a 2nd or 3rd round after the first stuck one too...
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

The brass jag keeps the rod centered. No worries about plowing into the bore.

I also use pretty light taps. If it's stuck good, then there's probably something else wrong (like Pat mentioned - a bulge).

The squibs I wound up with doing uber-light 300blk loads (going for airgun sound signatures) were easily tapped out with nothing but the weight of the rod I was using with some 1-2" throws.

So I should put the cleaning rod into the breech end of the barrel? What if the obstruction is much closer to that end? Would it make sense to push it out so that it travels as little as possible through the barrel?

BTW, I am new to this forum and already I think it is a great place. Thank you all!

I always send everything out the direction it's supposed to go (all your burrs should be folded over flowing outward). If it's lodged in there good (like a bulge), then I'd break that practice and send it out the shortest distance.
