I would have offered to shoot it while it was still...

Five weeks is your deadline to recover Chris. At the end of that five weeks is the Tactical Shotgun Championship. Don't make me have to drive all the way out there just to drag you back here for that.

I got a few emails and messages asking if we are still a go for the match on Sunday with the anticipated weather forecast calling for thunderstorms. The answer today is: yes we are.

You all know how quickly weather changes in this lovely state of ours. Unless we get continous rain and lightning in the St Francis area, I don't forsee us cancelling the match. Check here and our website on Saturday night for updates.

I've bought more magnets and we will be checking everyone's ammo at each stage as each competitor gets up in the line to shoot. It'll be a slight but necessary inconvenience. Checking your ammo will only take a few seconds. We know that most of you will not be problem, but we have to watch out for the ones that brought the banned ammo to the last match. To keep it fair and just, everyone's ammo (including the staff's) will be checked. I'm sure most of you would not mind this little inconvenience since it is for the protection of the targets.

Jomar,

It's your steel and your rules of course, but I would like to point out that there is quite a bit steel JACKETED ammo with a lead core that will stick to a magnet that won't harm steel targets.

Examples being
wolf (darn near anything they make is steel jacketed), Winchester white box 308, and a few others.

What are your thoughts on that?
In Soviet Russia program executes you!

Jomar and I are both here right now. If it sticks to a magnet, it cannot be used, period. With so many different brands of out-of-country ammo and so many variations of bullet heads, we don't have the time and resources to be checking all the ammo.

Bottom line is that the cheaper ammo as attractive to the pockets, but are very damaging to the targets. Those damaged targets from the last match were pratically brand new, and we had to replace them after one match.

I think that's a good policy and I will be doing the same thing at Forest Lake Sportsmans Club. The clubs make a big investment to provide steel to shoot during the matches, they have to protect that investment.

Thanks Jay. And as much as it sucks I'm glad I went in when I did. Doc said it was a miracle it hadn't burst yet and it was so vile and infected it would have likely killed me in less than 24hrs if it had.

And no they would not let me keep it.

Well considering I was on my feet 4 hours after surgery and spent most of my day dealing with storm damage to my home, I think I'll be good in 5 weeks. I'm still running off a generator, but at least we got the 4" of water pumped out of the basement. Oh yea.....I've had a great last 24hrs.

I just looked at my ammo and they are the green tips. This may be a long shot, but does anyone know of any store in the metro that has the 223 in stock without overflated prices?

Folks, we're not trying to be range pricks with this ammo stuff. The rules and the process of testing them with magnets are very common to the major 3-gun matches. I actually have a batch of Federal XM80 FMJ 308 ammo that I know are not steel core or armor piercing, but they have enough steel in the jacket to stick to a magnet. Would they damage a steel target? No more than the other 308 ammo I have that does not stick to a magnet. Would I expect an RO to believe me when I tell him its not steel core ammo when his magnet sticks to my ammo? No. Nor would I expect him to take the time and hold up the match to further look into my ammo, or expect him to know all the different types of 308 ammo and what material they are made out of.

We understand that getting good ammo is hard, and sometimes all there is are the stuff with steel core. We simply cannot risk the steel coer ammo to be used on the steel targets. Only other solution to that is to use paper targets, but I'm sure no one is going to like having to be the one to walk up to 200 yards to score and paste. Thats what will happen if the steel targets we have now gets damaged and we cannot afford to replace them. And if our targets continue to get damaged by these steel core ammo, we guarantee that the good folks who bring personally-owned steel targets for us to use will not be allowed to do so anymore as we will not allow their personal property to have the same fate.

Okay, so you really have no excuse to skip shooting 3-gun this Sunday then. See you then!

What are your thoughts on that?

Wolf and most other Russian steel case ammo is thin copper jacket followed by steel then lead. There was a website that did a recent test of ammo and found Russian ammo such as Wolf shot out the barrel much faster then copper jacket and lead only. If its wearing down the barrels at an increased rate it's safe to assume the same for targets I'd think.

Just saw what you posted in your introduction posting. You didn't tell me your a veteran. If you come to the match tomorrow and bring your guns, your rifle ammo is on me.
