Dayton on record AGAINST 'STAND YOUR GROUND'

Of course he vetoed 'defense of person and dwelling' last time but he decided to chime in today on SYG now that there is a little hysteria.

What is with this guy? Does he have a 'Borderline Personality'? ......meaning on the borderline of being 'non functional' Someone saw him at a campaign event 'popping pills'

Is this guy 'Heavily Medicated'.....he sure looks goofy but once elected all he has to do is show up for a certain number of events and he's fullfilling his job. Does he spend most of his time Drooling in his bedroom. Is he a 'mental case' Son of a Billionaire who can buy some really cool jobs like Senator / Governor?

The Minnesota primary has only just ended, but the state Republican Party is already out with an attack against the Democratic nominee, former U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton, slamming him for his performance in Washington — and his personal demeanor.

“He was absolutely positively, one of the worst Senators in America,” the announcer says, referring to an “honor” that was bestowed on Dayton and several other Senators by Time magazine in 2006. “And Mark Dayton agrees — Dayton gave himself a failing grade. Time magazine called Dayton ‘erratic’ after he closed his office, fearing a nonexistent terrorist threat. Dayton’s behavior was called ‘a strange aberration,’ ‘perplexing,’ ‘panicky.’”

This ad is mostly true. The Time cover with Dayton’s photo and the word “erratic” is a mock-up, but otherwise it’s fairly accurate. In the years since he left office, Dayton has openly discussed his struggles with alcoholism, saying that he had relapsed before the end of his Senate term, and has also disclosed that he has been medicated for depression.

Stand your ground isn't needed.

Plain and simple.

Dayton on record AGAINST 'STAND YOUR GROUND'

Postby jshuberg on Wed Jul 17, 2013 3:53 pm

It is if you shoot someone in self defense, and an over-zealous prosecutor tries to make the claim that you could have first tried to retreat, and so self defense wasn't legally authorized.

The decision to use your firearm under threat of death would most likely occur under an already highly compromised position with the adrenaline pumping, etc. The failure to realize that a possible, theoretical avenue of retreat may have existed shouldn't preclude you from making a self defense claim. It is an unnecessary legal requirement for self defense that only serves to diminish a valid self defense claim by requiring the victim to make a rational situational assessment of his surroundings, and to then make a rational decision if retreat is possible, at the very instant where great bodily harm or death is imminent.

Isn't that what happened with Zimmerman? And he beat the charges anyway?

No stand your ground needed.

Doesn't seem that way. Self defense is already a right.

Heard some radio talker bet that Dayton wouldn't run for re-election ....because it's too much like work.....and he's a born with a silver spoon in his mouth Dilettante.

Republicans and conservatives had better make a huge turnout in 2014...one party government in mn can't go on for 2 cycles.

Shocker. Heffay backing Mark Dayton. Stand your ground is needed. Sorry Heff but your stance is warped. I don't think you can use Zimmerman as an example for stand your ground. He didn't stand his ground, Martin pinned him to the ground. jshuberg is right. With stand your ground it is a lot less likely that a prosecutor could nail you to a wall.

This may sound like a ridiculous example but I am going to use it.... Lets say a shooting/stabbing happens in a crowded area. I'm a 140 pounds and I am with my buddy who is 320 pounds. Obviously even if I am armed my first instinct is to book it for the exit, needless to say I will beat my buddy to the exit. So we will say my buddy shoots the instigator/criminal and I get called as a witness in court. A prosecutor could argue that my friend should have been able to exit as well siince we were together.

Lets be real, the law is not about justice. ITS ABOUT MISDIRECTION AND LOOPHOLES, WHOEVER PLAYS THE GAME BETTER WINS. STAND YOUR GROUND WILL NOT HURT US SO WHY NOT?

Better safe than sorry.

Stand your ground also keeps you from getting sued in civil court.

The whole SYG thing in Minnesota is pretty much a moot point anyway, no? It's not going anywhere in the legislature anytime soon, and depending on who the next president is and how well he/she riles up the liberal gentry, its chances of ever becoming law in Minnesota are pretty much zero for the foreseeable future IMHO.

I agree with you when you say that it won't pass, but its the principle. I was 99% sure Obama would get re-elected but I voted anyway.

Do we need to start a WHOLE NEW THREAD about what the difference between trolling and opinions are?

Probably. You look pretty new.

Dayton on record AGAINST 'STAND YOUR GROUND'

Postby whiteox on Wed Jul 17, 2013 5:00 pm

Are there a lot of documented cases of folks using a gun in self defense and getting hung out to dry by a prosecutor?

I haven't done the research but I have hunch that if there are some it was probably stupid people, doing stupid things and winning stupid prizes.

true but heffaay just posted an article about a woman firing warning shots at her husband and getting 20 years so I don't know. I'm sure it has happened.

Like Obama says... "If it Saves one Life!!!"
